Millions Of People Use Ai Bots To Create Deepfake Nudes On Telegram

In today’s digital landscape, social media platforms have become integral to our daily lives. However, as their reach grows, so do concerns about user safety, especially for children. This has prompted legal actions against some of the most prominent social media companies, raising questions about how these platforms manage content and user interactions.
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has faced a wave of lawsuits from 33 U.S. states, accusing the company of designing addictive features that harm children’s well-being. The states, including California, New York, and Florida, allege that Meta intentionally promotes addictive behaviors to keep children engaged. TikTok has also found itself in a similar position, facing lawsuits from attorneys general across 14 states. The platform is accused of using features like autoplay videos and beauty filters that keep young users engaged, potentially harming their mental health.
Despite efforts by these platforms to address harmful content, criticism persists. Users have reported being suspended or banned on Meta’s platforms for seemingly minor infractions, ...
... like using sarcasm or being flagged as underage despite proving otherwise. TikTok, on the other hand, has replaced a large portion of its content moderation staff with AI, raising doubts about the platform's ability to filter inappropriate content effectively.
Meanwhile, Telegram Messenger has emerged as a new area of concern. Experts have highlighted the presence of AI-powered bots on Telegram capable of creating deepfake nude images and videos, including of minors. A report by WIRED found over 50 such bots, with millions of users accessing them each month. The ability of these bots to create damaging content in minutes poses a severe threat, especially to young users.
Henry Ajder, a deepfake expert, expressed alarm over the widespread availability of these tools, describing them as a "nightmarish scenario" for young girls and women. Despite Telegram’s removal of the bots, questions remain about why such content was allowed to proliferate. The arrest of Telegram’s co-founder, Pavel Durov, on charges including child exploitation and drug trafficking, has only intensified concerns.
With users spending over 2.5 hours a day on social media, there is a growing argument for holding platforms to higher standards of accountability. Regulatory bodies may need to step in, ensuring that platforms like Meta, TikTok, and Telegram prioritize user safety and maintain a responsible approach to content moderation.
