The rising energy consumption of AI technologies has become a pressing concern. As AI and generative AI reshape industries by streamlining operations, boosting productivity, and reducing costs, they have also led to a surge in energy demands. This shift has caught the attention of notable figures like Rene Haas, CEO of Arm, who has cautioned against the potential energy challenges. According to Haas, if current trends continue, AI data centers might require up to 20% to 25% of the U.S.'s total power needs, a significant increase from today's 4% or less.

Recognizing the urgency of this issue, many AI companies are now exploring sustainable energy solutions. Microsoft has taken a bold step by collaborating with Constellation Energy Corporation in a 20-year power purchase agreement. This partnership includes reviving the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant's Unit 2, which has been inactive since 2019. While TMI's Unit 1 remains decommissioned following a partial meltdown in 1979, this move aims to generate around 835 megawatts of carbon-free energy, contributing to the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) grid.

Google, ...
... too, is committed to addressing the energy challenge with a focus on clean energy sources. The tech giant recently announced a pioneering agreement with Kairos Power, a company dedicated to advancing nuclear technology. Through this partnership, Google will purchase energy generated by multiple small modular reactors (SMRs), marking the first corporate agreement of its kind. The deal is expected to supply up to 500 MW of round-the-clock, carbon-free power to U.S. electricity grids by 2030, with additional reactors planned by 2035. This initiative complements Google’s ongoing efforts in solar and wind energy, as the company strives toward its ambitious 24/7 carbon-free energy and net-zero targets.

The leadership shown by companies like Google and Microsoft in adopting clean nuclear energy could inspire other tech firms to pursue similar solutions. As more companies prioritize sustainability, the broader tech industry may shift toward greener, more energy-efficient operations.
