Elon Musk’s ambitious plan for autonomous vehicles has taken a significant leap forward with the unveiling of Tesla’s new Cybercab at the We, Robot event. While the journey to fully autonomous driving is far from over, the launch of the Cybercab represents a major milestone for Tesla’s mission to bring self-driving cars to the masses.

The event, held amidst great anticipation, showcased not only the Cybercab but also other key innovations like the Tesla Robovan and the humanoid Tesla bot, Optimus. Each of these products signals Tesla’s continued push toward a future dominated by AI-driven vehicles and robots.

Musk made a grand entrance at the event, driving the Cybercab onto the stage—albeit fashionably late by nearly an hour. The Cybercab’s striking design, featuring upward-opening butterfly doors and a streamlined, modern aesthetic, immediately captivated the audience. Inside, the vehicle’s cabin is designed to seat two passengers, offering a glimpse into a world of fully autonomous travel.

What makes the Cybercab stand out is its lack of traditional driving controls. There’s no steering ...
... wheel or pedals; instead, the vehicle relies on Tesla’s sophisticated AI and camera systems for navigation. This emphasis on autonomy is complemented by an innovative inductive charging system that allows the Cybercab to recharge wirelessly. Rather than using a plug, the vehicle charges through electromagnetic induction, highlighting Tesla’s forward-thinking approach to electric vehicle design.

However, before the Cybercab can become a reality on the roads, it will need to pass through regulatory approvals. Tesla is targeting a production start in 2026, with initial deliveries planned for late 2027.

Musk highlighted the potential of the Cybercab to transform transportation. He announced that the vehicle would be priced at under $30,000, with operating costs estimated to be around $0.20 per mile. Musk also emphasized the Cybercab’s safety, claiming that it could be 10 to 20 times safer than human-driven vehicles, thanks to its advanced AI.

Beyond the Cybercab, Tesla revealed the Robovan, a larger autonomous vehicle capable of carrying up to 20 passengers. Unlike the Cybercab, which is designed for smaller passenger groups, the Robovan is intended for high-density transportation needs, making it ideal for ride-hailing services or for use as a shuttle for sports teams or construction crews.

The Robovan will also be available for purchase, offering a versatile solution for those needing to transport larger groups of people or goods. Musk suggested that the Robovan could drastically reduce transportation costs, potentially bringing the price of travel down to $0.05 per mile.

In addition to these vehicles, Tesla also gave an update on its humanoid robot, Optimus. Designed to assist with a variety of tasks, Optimus aims to bring advanced robotics into everyday life. As a demonstration, the robot served drinks to attendees, showcasing its potential to handle simple tasks. Though pricing has not been finalized, the robot is expected to retail between $25,000 and $30,000.

Tesla’s We, Robot event painted a vivid picture of a future where autonomous vehicles and robots play a central role in our lives. As production plans move forward, the anticipation builds for what comes next in this groundbreaking journey toward a more autonomous world.
