From modest beginnings, he expanded the company’s global presence. Even after retiring, Tata remains a significant figure, concentrating on philanthropy and supporting startups while championing responsible business practices.

Why is Ratan Tata so loved in India?

In a nation of over 1.4 billion, few business leaders command as much admiration as Ratan Tata. The revered Indian industrialist and former chairman of Tata Sons sadly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.

Ratan Tata was a remarkable business magnate and philanthropist whose influence profoundly shaped India’s economic landscape. Revered for his humility and modest nature, he was one of the country’s most globally recognised business figures. Leading the Tata Group for over two decades, Tata retired at 75 in 2012, leaving a lasting legacy of integrity and innovation.

Tata was an exemplary industry leader, admired for his strong business acumen and ethical vision, steering clear of major controversies. His leadership transformed his family business into a global giant, with revenues surpassing 100 billion dollars in 2011-12 ...

Across India, one brand stands out above all others: Tata. Whether it’s Tata Salt or Tata Motors, nearly every Indian has encountered a product or service from the company. Tata is arguably India’s most prominent and recognisable brand.

However, this success story didn’t come without its hurdles. Ratan Tata showed immense courage, taking on significant acquisitions despite the risks. When he succeeded JRD Tata as Chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Trusts in 1991, he began restructuring the Tata Group at a time when India was opening its doors to economic liberalisation.

Ratan Tata’s philanthropic legacy is most visible through the Tata Trusts, one of India’s largest charitable foundations. The Trust has established technology centres, provided scholarships, and supported initiatives in healthcare, education, rural development, and sustainable living. Notably, Tata personally donated 500 crore during the pandemic, earning widespread admiration for his generosity.

Tata was also known for his love of dogs. At Bombay House, Tata Sons’ headquarters, several stray dogs are cared for by the company. For his extraordinary contributions to industry and society, Ratan Tata was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, two of India’s highest civilian awards. He has also been awarded numerous honorary doctorates from prestigious universities, both in India and internationally, acknowledging his enduring impact and legacy.
