Hyundai Mobis Reveals 65 New Mobility Technologies Set To Enhance The Automotive Industry
Hyundai Mobis’ R&D Tech Day 2024: A Showcase of Groundbreaking Mobility Innovations
On October 4, 2024, Hyundai Mobis, one of the world’s leading automotive technology suppliers, held its highly anticipated bi-annual R&D Tech Day. Known for unveiling cutting-edge innovations, the event this year was no different, showcasing multiple projects aimed at revolutionizing the future of mobility. The event set the stage for the company’s strategic ambitions to lead the automotive industry into a new era of electrification, efficiency, and safety.
What Were the Key Announcements?
At the 2024 R&D Tech Day, Hyundai Mobis introduced 65 new mobility technologies, of which 14 were world-first innovations. These groundbreaking technologies focus on crucial sectors, including electrification, automotive electronics, and advanced safety systems. According to Hyundai Mobis, these innovations are poised to be commercialized within the next two to three years, marking significant advancements in the industry.
The event highlighted Hyundai Mobis’ remarkable commitment to research and development (R&D). ...
... The company invested a record 1.7 trillion KRW (about $1.2 billion) in its efforts, with a strong emphasis on electrification and electronics. This investment aims to solidify Hyundai Mobis' position as a leader in the rapidly evolving automotive sector. The technologies were grouped into seven major themes, providing a comprehensive vision of how the company plans to shape the future of mobility.
Focus on Electrification and Sustainability
Hyundai Mobis introduced three primary development strategies focused on electrification components. The first is the drive system strategy, featuring a 3-in-1 integrated drive system. This system, which merges motors, reduction gears, and inverters, is designed to offer high efficiency, compact design, and oil cooling technology. This integration is expected to significantly enhance performance while minimizing the size and weight of components. Specialized drive systems for Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs) and Advanced Automotive Mobility (AAM) vehicles are also in the works.
The second area of focus is the battery system strategy, where Hyundai Mobis is emphasizing thermal management to improve heat resistance and prevent fires. Additionally, the company is developing Cell-to-Pack technology to increase energy density, which will enable electric vehicles to travel longer distances on a single charge. Hyundai Mobis is also exploring next-generation battery cells and recycled battery systems to further boost sustainability.
The final strategy involves power conversion systems, where the company is working on an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). This unit supports Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity, allowing vehicles to communicate with infrastructure and other vehicles. Hyundai Mobis is also accelerating the development of power semiconductors to support its electrification goals.
The Importance of R&D Tech Day
Hyundai Mobis’ R&D Tech Day is a biennial event traditionally reserved for clients, where the company showcases its latest research and technological developments. However, the 2024 edition was unique, as it was opened to external stakeholders, underscoring the company’s confidence in its innovations. The event took place at the Uiwang Research Center, which serves as Hyundai Mobis' specialized Electrification Research Building in Gyeonggi Province. The facility is dedicated to the research, development, and testing of electrification technologies, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to the future of mobility.
Hyundai Mobis’ President, Lee Young-Kook, expressed optimism about the company’s ability to lead the industry, despite challenges such as the Chasm (a phase in technological adoption). “Hundreds of researchers at the Uiwang Research Center are continuously engaged in R&D activities, ensuring Hyundai Mobis remains at the forefront of electrification and mobility innovation,” said Lee.
Looking Forward
With a strong focus on electrification, electronics, and sustainability, Hyundai Mobis is positioning itself as a key player in the future of mobility. The innovations unveiled during the 2024 R&D Tech Day highlight the company’s commitment to transforming the automotive industry, from eco-friendly solutions to advanced technologies for electric vehicles. As the automotive world shifts toward cleaner and more efficient solutions, Hyundai Mobis’ forward-thinking strategies are expected to play a pivotal role in this evolution.
