Womens Shoe Trends For 2010

One of the biggest footwear trends for 2010 is not in the heel shape or sole height, but in the colour. For this season, the catwalks, and now the high street are full of the colour purple. There is a fantastic range of shades to choose from, from deep berry shades, to neon bright purples, so stock up on purple footwear now.
Shoes are reaching new heights in 2010, but this season the killer heel look is subtler with height being concealed thanks to platform soles. Far subtler than the platform soles of the 70s glam rockers and the over the top platforms of the early 90s, this year soles are just an inch or two thick, giving extra balance and allowing you to wear an even higher heel.
The surprise hit of the summer, wedges are everywhere this year. Look for wedges in natural finishes, like cork and rope, which look nice and fresh for summer. When autumn and winter roll around, wedges will still be with us, but in boot form, so pick out some knee length and ankle boot wedges now.
Wedges and platforms soles are a godsend to heel lovers. They allow you to gain extra height without putting the kind of strain on ...
... your feet that you associate with stilettos and towering heels. Wearing heels 24-7 can take its toll not just on your feet, but your back, neck and knees too, so try to mix up your footwear, wearing flats when you can.
The shoe boot and ankle boot have emerged as one of the true successes of the last decade. Now a wardrobe essential, they are perfect for the autumn, or for giving a tougher edge to skirts and dresses in the summer. This season, go for a pair that incorporates the concealed platform style.
Brogues have made something of a comeback, not just for men, but for women too. The only trouble with brogues is that it can be hard to find a pair that looks feminine. Designers and high street stores have come to the rescue with heeled brogues. These are a great alternative to the, sometimes dull, court shoe. Look for elaborate lacing to really make a statement.
Footwear seems to be taking on a whole new sense of functionality. As well as the more wearable platform and wedge styles, there are also a whole new wave of pumps and heels with thick elastic strap detailing hitting the stores. These are a comfortable way to wear heels and look so current too.
Footwear detailing is big for 2010. Look for shoes that feature extra lacing and particularly shoes with corsages and floral-inspired detailing at the ankle. These look great for autumn, especially in the shade of the moment - purple. Wear with a skirt to really maximise the effect of the corsage. Our guide to your footwear must-haves for 2010 was written by Barton Loi, a professional stylist.
