Many of us find that the most difficult present buying of the year is when the recipient of our carefully chosen gifts is our dad. Whether it is his birthday present your searching for, a Christmas present of a Father''s Day gift, dads are notoriously difficult to buy for.

Whilst most mums are often more than happy to receive a general mother''s gift, like perfume, jewellery or chocolates, dads are often harder to please. There are no such standard tropes to follow and the clich? dad gifts - socks, cufflinks, ties - don''t fool anyone.

If you are having trouble shopping for Dad this year, here''s a quick look at a few ideas that could at least help to get you moving on the right track towards finding the perfect present.

Start by thinking carefully about your dad''s major interests. If he is a budding photographer, some new camera equipment could make for a fantastic gift. If he has a favourite TV show, the latest box set could fit the bill. Spend a couple of days observing or just thinking in detail about the things in life that your dad enjoys the most and see what inspiration follows.

Unlike our ...
... mothers, many of our fathers do appreciate a gift with practical value. Whether this may come in the form of gadgets for the kitchen, tools for the garden or accessories for the car, useful gifts can be a hit with dads.

Similarly, if you can think of anything he needs or doesn''t enjoy buying for himself this could also make a great gift. If your dad isn''t a fan of clothes shopping but his wardrobe could do with an update why not head down to a fashionable high street store and check out their ranges of mens jumpers, shirts or jackets to find something to suit?

Of course, a good present doesn''t have to be something you can wrap. What about cooking up his favourite meal or going on a grand day out? You could buy him an ''experience gift'' like a helicopter ride or a day spent drag racing. The choices are endless.

Sometimes the best presents don''t have to cost you anything at all. If you live far away or lead an especially busy life and don''t get an opportunity to see your dad very often, planning a day out, or even a day in, and spending some precious quality together could be the best present of all. Barton Loi is a freelance fashion writer and journalist. They recommend New Look for mens jumpers.
