The Skinny on Organic Beauty Products
Hordes of cosmetic companies frequently toss around the terms “organic beauty products.†Less often, that label comes with an explanation. So what does organic mean? According to the USDA, organic is a term applied to animals and plants grown without pesticides, genetically modified organisms and other synthetic fertilizers.
What is organic and how consumers can be sure:
• A true organic beauty product should be composed of at least 95 percent organic material and carry the USDA organic seal.
• Unfortunately, organic can also be applied to beauty products containing at least 70 percent organic components †it cannot carry the USDA seal. Even products containing less than 70 percent organic ingredients are often labeled organic, but the only proof would be the few organic elements cited on the ingredient panel.
• It’s difficult for consumers to ensure they’re buying strictly organic beauty products. Look for the seal, read the ingredient ...
... list and check to see if the product is Ecocert certified.
• Ecocert, Control and Certification Body, is an accredited European organization that has rigorous inspection standards in place to guarantee products are organic. Ecocert has strict regulations and criteria concerning natural and organic cosmetics; they’re more stringent than any in place in the United States.
The organic movement is more than a trend, it’s an effort to produce and consume in a more sustainable, eco-friendly and healthful †for both the environment and consumers †manner. So once you’ve identified and purchased an organic beauty product, bear in mind the benefits of using it.
Benefits of buying organic beauty products:
• The environmental impact of your purchase is minimal to non-existent. Some cosmetic companies go further, using recyclable or biodegradable packing materials. Since there were no harmful chemicals used to make the product, there was no harsh runoff or negative effects to the environment.
• For consumers, organic beauty products offer several benefits. The most obvious one, the product you put on your body doesn’t contain unnatural ingredients. There are several studies that show the toxicity of certain cosmetics, and it’s impossible to know all the effects they have on the skin and body. Irritation can arise from the use of any beauty product, but it’s safe to believe that a reaction to an organic product will be less long-lasting and less serious than one to a synthetically created, toxin-filled one.
• Organic beauty products typically contain ingredients that work to nourish the skin. Vitamin C, for examples, absorbs free radicals, byproducts of UV rays and pollution. Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant, and when taken with vitamin C, it has been shown to reduce the chances of skin cancer. Vitamin A can help repair damaged skin tissue, and Vitamin B helps keep nails, hair and skin strong.
It is a misconception that all organic beauty products are pricey or that they only work for a certain demographic. Many stores carry discounted organic beauty products that meet the needs of people with diverse skin and hair types.
Next time you need new lipstick or you’re on the hunt for that perfect, anti-aging cream, consider the benefits of buying organic beauty products. They’re better for your body and for the world in which you live.
