Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) facilitate direct communication between the brain's electrical activity and external devices, transforming how we interact with technology. Originating in the 1960s, early BCI research focused on controlling simple devices through brain signals. Today, advancements by companies like Neuralink, which develops implantable Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) devices, showcase the remarkable potential of this technology. BCIs aim to assist, augment, and repair cognitive and sensory-motor functions, allowing individuals, especially those with disabilities, to control devices such as computers, robotic limbs, or motorized wheelchairs purely through thought.
BCIs operate through four essential components: signal acquisition, signal preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification. Signal acquisition involves capturing brain waves via either invasive or non-invasive methods. This is followed by signal preprocessing, which enhances the recorded brain waves and reduces noise.
