Technological innovations are reshaping industries, and the automotive world is no exception. Ford has taken a step toward integrating personalized ads into its vehicles, leveraging technology to enhance user experiences. However, the system behind these ads has sparked concerns.

Ford’s new patent, “In-Vehicle Advertisement Presentation Systems And Methods,” filed in February 2023 and published in August 2024, describes a system that monitors in-car conversations to deliver targeted ads. The ads will be based on factors such as location, speed, and the vehicle’s predicted route, and will be presented via the car's infotainment system.

The system also uses historical data and third-party apps to tailor the ads more precisely to the current trip. Privacy advocates have raised concerns, as the patent does not provide details on how Ford plans to protect the data it collects.

Ford’s previous patents, including a system to repossess cars and one to report other vehicles’ speed, have also faced criticism. Despite this, Ford claims that these patents are standard practices to protect intellectual property.
