Why Use Ppe In Hazard Waste Sites?
PPE or Personal Protective Equipment consists of a range of clothing and equipment worn by employees to protect their bodies from any workplace hazard, which can be anything from falling debris to molten metal or electric shock. When hazards cannot be prevented through administrative or engineering controls, PPE is used to protect the body of the workers.
With the help of personal protective equipment, many injuries or fatalities have been avoided at workplaces. However, too little PPE and a great level of PPE protection are always associated with risks. As a matter of fact, most workers are unaware of the fact that too many accidents happen due to lack of or over use of PPE.
Osha has regulated employers to provide proper PPE to their employees. They must also let the employees know about the importance of PPE at hazardous sites. This is because some employees choose not to wear due to lack of information.
Some of the commonly used PPE at hazardous work places are given below:
Eye and face protection: Eye and face are the most sensitive parts of our body and the two most forgotten parts to protect. ...
... With the use of goggles, full face shields, spectacles, the eye and face can be protected. This PPE is highly helpful during handling of chemical substances.
Respiratory protection:
The hazards which you cannot see is the most dangerous of all. With the presence of air borne toxic substances prevailing in most hazardous work sites, the use of respiratory protection equipment is highly valued. The respiratory protection equipment is designed to protect workers from fumes, spray, dusts or other hazardous materials, which could bring permanent or long term injuries or even death.
Hand Protection:
Every year, injuries to the hand are reported. When you are handling hazardous materials at the work site, it is advisable to wear gloves that are especially designed according to the type of work you handle.
Footwear:
Special designed shoes, boots, foot guards and leggings must serve as a protection against hot substances, chemicals and slippery floors.
Safety programs must be provided to the workers so that they can learn about the proper ways to wear, clean, maintain and repair their PPE. In HAZWOPER safety training, workers are educated on the proper use of PPE.
