The Royal Enfield Himalayan 650 - Simple, Reliable And Affordable

Built to conquer the rugged terrains of its namesake mountains, the Himalayan is an accessible adventure bike designed for harsh conditions. Simple, reliable, and cost-effective - its design ensures reliable riding experiences every time!
Royal Enfield recently refreshed their Himalayan with a water-cooled engine and new electronics but maintained the same essential DNA. That includes dirt-friendly wheels (21-inch front and 17-inch rear), long travel suspension, and serious ground clearance.
Engine
The 2022 Himalayan is an upgraded version of its predecessor, boasting enhanced strength and capabilities with ride-by-wire throttle control that offers four engine modes that provide different levels of power delivery and ABS settings, a shorter front rack that doubles as gas tank crash guard/jerrycan mount, revised cushioning seat pads and rider navigation capabilities (similar to Meteor). Ride-by-wire throttle control with four different engine modes also allows power delivery adjustment. ABS settings are added as features of the ride-by-wire throttle control system.
On the road, the Himalayan's 411cc ...
... air/oil-cooled single is smooth and tractable but lacks an extended power band; peak output occurs before 7,000rpm. Off-road, however, it provides confidence-inducing performance.
Suspension
The Himalayan boasts a tall and long-travel suspension designed to make travel across harsh terrain easy, featuring spoke wheels with on/off-road tires and provisions for mounting panniers.
YSS provides an upgrade shock that allows you to create a slightly taller bike for greater ground clearance and off-road capabilities. Adjustable spring preload and damping settings make setting up suspension tailored to your weight and use easy.
The Himalayan's engine can comfortably accommodate highway speeds. However, sustained operation at high RPMs may result in vibrations and heat. Installing a rear mono shock would significantly enhance driving comfort on long trips.
Brakes
As with its predecessor, the Himalayan features single-disc front and rear brakes with 2-piston front calipers; however, it now fits a larger 320mm disc. The standard is switchable ABS, which can be disengaged for off-road use.
The Himalayan's rudder and suspension offer plenty of travel over dirt roads, effortlessly handling rough conditions that would cause its competitors to shrug their shoulders and turn around. Furthermore, its 31.5-inch high seat has been reshaped and includes additional foam padding for rider comfort.
Ride-by-wire electronics allow riders to select between two engine maps and an Eco mode. In addition, the electronics come equipped with an onboard trip computer and a 4-inch touchscreen display for infotainment purposes, including GPS navigation.
Tires
Royal Enfield's Himalayan has quickly earned a strong following among riders looking for an easy, cost-effective adventure touring machine. Royal Enfield recently introduced some effective updates with their 2022 model, including an enhanced windscreen and dual-purpose front pannier rack/crash guard combo to protect its gas tank against crashes.
The soft suspension works exceptionally well off-road, encouraging slow, steady riding. On B-roads, however, its lack of confidence-inducing properties becomes apparent.
The braking system helps mitigate some of the bike's limitations with its 300mm front disc and twin-piston traditionally mounted caliper that can be manually switched off; however, its rear brake could use additional power.
Electronics
The Himalayan may not be designed as a race bike, but riders may still like to adjust its fuel mapping. Luckily, programmable ECUs are readily available.
Though the new Himalayan 650 may be modern in many respects, it remains an iconic adventure bike. Sharing much of its DNA from its predecessor model - including steel frame construction with 21" front wheel and 17" rear wheels, long-travel suspension, and plenty of ground clearance - its features remain timeless.
Cooper Motorcycles now offers customizable navigation modules designed to add functionality and customization to this screen, setting apart the Himalayan from all other Enfields.
Design
The Himalayan is loved for its lightweight, easy maneuverability off-road, and low seat height (31.5 inches). Additionally, this model comes equipped with practical tank-mounted pannier rails and an impressive top box that boasts impressive carrying capacities.
Test mules of the Himalayan 650 were recently seen. They appeared to feature an adjustable USD front suspension with preload, compression, rebound adjustments, ride-by-wire throttle with four riding modes, and ABS that can be switched off for off-road use.
This variant features 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheels with tube tires, as well as the addition of a Tripper navigation pod similar to what Royal Enfield offers on their Meteor model.
