The year 1985 will forever go down as one of the craziest years in the history of the United States. People were in uproar and there were problems in the political system. Although the rest of the United States was going crazy, those at the World Series of Poker in 1985 were treated to an excellent showing. The event featured more money and more players than the World Series of Poker had ever had in history up to that point. The greatest and most talented players around the world gathered around to play.

The tournament took place in the middle of May and fielded 140 players. Each player is required to present a 10,000 dollar entry fee. The entry fee is all put towards the final pot of money available. This meant the total prize money for the 1985 World Series of Poker was at 1.4 million dollars.

The tournament weeded out competitors at a faster rate than about any tournament in the history of the World Series of Poker. By the 2nd day of play there were more than 100 players eliminated from the field. This left only 24 players standing on the second day of play. This would truly be one of the fastest paced events ...

Within all of these eliminated players there were predictably many players that had won the tournament before that were eliminated. As May 19th approached there were only 9 players left in the tournament competing for the grand prize. This significant cut in just a couple days time left a lot of excitement around the surrounding players. With so many tough players falling, everyone wanted to know who would be good enough to take home the main event.

Out of the nine players remaining there was only one former World Series of Poker champion remaining.

Eventually the field was reduced to just two players: T.J. Cloutier and Bill Smith. These players battled tough against each other and each saw their game go to the line early. It appeared that each one would have a fair shot at taking the championship. As legend has it, Smith was supposedly tipsy from drinking so much and many questioned his ability to make the right decisions.

Despite the tipsiness of Smith he was able to put up a good battle against Cloutier, who was coming full force. As the game progressed it was clear that Smith was on his way to taking home the championship. Smith would become a fan favorite for his ability to play his cards so well despite being less than sober.

The tournament was ultimately one of the best and most popular events to take place up to that point. It was clear even then that the World Series of Poker would someday catch more of the attention of the general public around the nation. Tournaments like this one in 1985 were a big part of helping the tournament become what it has become today.
