When I complained to my son Erik about things I can no longer remember, he replied: "What do you expect? With all you've stuffed into your head all these years, something is bound to fall out."

Along with the many notes on my fridge reminding me of things I have to do is a New Yorker cartoon depicting an elephant covered with Post-its, who tells his unadorned companion, "As I get older, I find I rely more and more on these sticky notes to remind me. " Many of us these days seem to be in need of memory assists, and millions of Americans are falling prey to supplements that claim to boost cognitive function.

But it is the baby boomers and beyond who are most concerned about the reliability of their memories and other cognitive functions. And it is to them that many poorly tested ...
... products are being pitched, claiming to enhance memory and concentration and restrain the cognitive decline that commonly accompanies aging.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-based consumer organization, recently reviewed the research, or lack thereof, supporting claims for various "memory pills" and concluded for all but one product: "Don't waste your money." The one exception, phosphatidylserine now being made from soybeans, looks promising in preliminary studies but costs about $ 90 a month, the center said in its printed report, Nutrition Action.

Despite the attention given to Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, these disorders, as ruinous as they are, afflict a minority of older people - from 3 percent to 10 percent of people over 65 - although the risk of dementia rises with age, affecting about 40 percent of those over 80.

But nearly all of us are at risk of such common cognitive deficits as forgetting why we walked from one room to another or being unable to remember the name of someone we know well. Also, with advancing age, it takes us longer to learn something new and to perform complex tasks.

The good news is that scientists have recently demonstrated that while brain activity typically slows with age, in normal healthy older people, large numbers of nerve cells are not lost. In fact, at any age, with the right stimuli, new nerve cells and connections between them can form to enhance brain function.
