How To Grow Bamboo

Planting a bamboo plant is considered to be more complex than planting several other plants. But that does not mean that it cannot be done. Here, we provide you with the basics that will ensure you a well cultivated bamboo plant.
Type of Bamboo
Bamboo is mainly classified into two types:-
1. Running variant- this type of bamboo is suitable for hedgerow plantation. They are also known to relay most of the rhizomes all around the areas where the bamboo has to be planted.
2. Clamping variant-this type of bamboo is suitable for nurturing the plant in containers. Due to this, they are more manageable than the running variants.
Bamboo can be grown inside as well as outside. Also, if you plan on nurturing a running type variant of bamboo in a container, then you should make use of the 5 gallon model. While selecting a bamboo, it is important that you ask about any specific characteristic as both clamping and running types have other variants too. Bamboos are also known to reach over 20 feet, so it is advisable to know the bamboo before buying it. If you are one of those people who just have to grow ...

Soil preparation
The site should be dug up properly and cleaned of all weeds. Loose, rich soil should then be put in the dug up area. Excess usage of manure and fertilizers ends up burning the plants. Hence it is not recommended.
Plantation and Irrigation
The rhizomes need to be inserted into the ground, approximately an inch or two. The plant should be set at the level of the container meaning that it should be planted at least 3 inches deep. Large amounts of mulch should be added as the soil needs to be moist. Watering needs to be done only when the soil gets dry. You wouldn't want your plant to soak in it. If the leaves roll and curl up, that's the time for watering the plant.
Exposure to Sun, Fertilization
Bamboos require a good amount of sunlight, but their growth wouldn't be hampered by some shade. Due this fact, you get many options in choosing a location for the plant. A more important thing to keep in mind is the drainage system of the soil. Excess water will cause the root to deteriorate.
Usage of a general fertilizer once a month will be more than sufficient in case of bamboo plantation.
Growth Management
Streambeds and ponds are the best areas for growing running variants of the bamboo plant. This is not done just for aesthetic purposes, but to keep a check on the root spread. A sidewalk also acts as a barrier for the plant. You can save the runners from excessive propagation by creating a border edging of approximately 30 inches or so.
Extra Tips
Pests and diseases go hand in hand while planting a bamboo plant. There are several types of pests that can affect the plant, so you should ensure that the appropriate fungicide and insecticides have been selected. Several types of chemicals are also available in the market but you should buy them only from reputable stores. A plants growth can be compromised and also kill it sometimes if the wrong chemical is selected.
Rhizomes are known to grow in a moist soil. They barely survive in dry soil. Don't expect to see immediate results in the growth department as the plant grows less in the initial years. The later years show acceleration in growth. The growth can be controlled as per the requirements by decreasing the amount of water and fertilization.
Bamboo leaves are known to fall almost all the time. These need to be cleared regularly. A bamboo plant can be easily managed by building plastic or metals. Bamboos give a new refreshed look in the house. A careful and regular care is all they require and if you can manage that well, then you can enjoy a great new look in your house.
