While the National Football League is known for being the most powerful entity in all of sports, it is always not as cracked up as it seems. While we in the public think of events such as the Super Bowl, the NFL Draft, and each week's games, there are behind the scenes issues. NFL players are people too. They may be in the limelight more than they bargain for, but everybody could fall at any time. The story of Jets backup quarterback Erik Ainge brings to light a big issue in the NFL, painkiller abuse.

Ainge has entered a rehab facility to reportedly deal with issues regarding painkiller addiction. While Ainge has a legitimate excuse for starting up on the drugs, the addiction that can come from it is not something many people understand. It has been compared to crack cocaine at times, and has become a highly sought street drug. The physical nature of the NFL leads to injuries, severe ones, at that. And with injuries, comes the need for the medication. The problem lies in the fact that players become addicted to it long after the injury is healed.

It is almost unfair to use Ainge as an example, as he is certainly ...
... not the only player with this problem. His battle has been well documented. He had suffered two injuries in his rookie year, a pinkie finger, and a foot injury. Following the injuries, he was suspended for substance abuse, thought to be painkillers. Ainge has proved how hard it is to escape this issue, as he took time off in 2009 from OTAs to deal with the problem. It, unfortunately, keeps popping back up.

Even sadder, it may cost Ainge a job. He was expected to compete for one of the Jets three roster spots at quarterback. With Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell and Kellen Clements aboard, it is a long shot to see Ainge get a spot in the rotation there. We can only hope that the issue is addressed. NFL players are breaking bones every week. The treatments provided, and the issues that result, are ruining players, and families, lives.
