Premium Processing Now Available For F-1, J-1, And Other Status Changes
In the past, if you were applying to change your immigration status to F-1 or J-1, you couldn't pay extra to expedite the processing of your application by USCIS. This has changed. Since June 13, 2023, USCIS now offers premium processing for certain non-immigrant status changes, including F-1, M-1, F-2, M-2, J-1, and J-2 classifications. This means you can pay an extra fee to get a decision on your application much faster.
But before going into the details, it is important to understand what premium processing is about. USCIS offers this option for some applications, allowing you to pay an additional fee to get a faster decision. Note that the processing timeframe for premium processing depends on the type of application you submit. Keep in mind that while it can significantly speed up your immigration case, it doesn't guarantee approval or improve your chances of getting approved.
There are two important dates to remember regarding premium processing for certain non-immigrant status changes:
• June 13, 2023: This was when USCIS began accepting premium processing requests for applicants seeking a change ...
... of status to F-1, M-1, F-2, M-2, J-1, or J-2, with a pending Form I-539 for extending or changing to non-immigrant status. You can apply for premium processing online or by mail.
• June 26, 2023 (second phase): From this date onwards, applicants for any of the above non-immigrant statuses became eligible to file Form I-907 for premium processing, either online or by mail. However, they must have already filed Form I-539 before submitting the I-907 request.
How does this change benefit you?
Premium processing for these statuses can benefit non-immigrants and students who must start their studies or medical residency on a specific date. This paid optional service may also make the immigration process more flexible and efficient for time-sensitive cases.
