Twitter is here to stay. It’s turned into an important tool for communication and has shrunk the world considerably in the course of a couple of years. Those who said it was a channel for trivial stream-of-consciousness posts were pretty well silenced when they saw the impact Twitter had during the protests of the Iranian elections of 2009. The mobile-device community has had to adapt to Twitter and make it easier for users to Tweet:

Twittelator:

This app offers a host of different features, including uploads to numerous photo-hosting sites and five video-hosting sites. Twittelator also allows you to select your text font and size, change your background color or have a look at other users’ templates if you’d like to customize past the three themes offered on the app. It’s also free (a good things, since those iPhone apps tend to add up quickly).

Twitellator Pro:

This feature-rich version of Twittelator has a staggering amount of options. It allows you to put together groups and subgroups of the Tweets that you follow, you can manage ...
... multiple accounts, select different skins, track trends and do much, much more. At $5, Twittelator Pro is a little more pricey, but it can do more than any other Twitter apps on the market.

Twitteriffic, v. 2.1.3

Twitterific has taken off like crazy, and for good reasons; it has such a wide range of search functions (searching by word or phrase, by place or by screen name), it has a desktop client for Mac machines and it easily post pictures to Yfrog, TwitPic/TwitVid, Posterous and Twitgoo/Twit/Vid. It’s also got a stripped-down user interface that is great for the casual everyday Twitterer.

Simply Tweet

SImplyTweet is a well-thought-out, easy-to-use Twitter app that integrates Posterous’ blogging site into its features. In fact, it can prompt you to go to Posterous for anything longer than the familiar 140-character limit for Tweets, and gives you a setting that allows you to select Posterous (or not) as your default blog. As with Twitterrific and Twittelator, you can save items destined for your Instapaper account, and pictures posted on SimplyTweet are simultaneously updated at Posterous (using your tweet as the post title and comment).

Twizzle

Don’t be put off by the cutesy name. Twizzle’s features are some of the best in all the paid iPhone Twitter apps out there. The uncluttered interface gives you easy access to your own tweets (from multiple accounts), favorites, mentions and trending topics, among other things. It’s still a fairly new app and will probably be subject to some tweaks and minor changes as it evolves.

Who knows where all this will end up a year or two down the line, when the next generation iPhone hits the stores and brings a whole host of new developments and new evolution in its wake. But as things stand right now, this is a pretty good lineup of iPhone Twitter apps, with a nice range of features and functionality for each one.
