In the past five years, the top performers in the energy sector consistently outperformed their peers in the same economic conditions. According to a recent report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) titled "Six Lessons from Energy's Top Performers: Energy Value Creators 2024," the average annual total shareholder returns (TSR) between 2019 and 2023 varied from 6% to 48% across different subsectors. The overall sector had an average TSR of 12%. Interestingly, there was a significant 30% difference in TSR between the top and bottom-performing companies within each subsector. BCG's study analyzed 150 of the largest energy companies, with a combined market capitalization of $5.1 trillion.

The clean tech subsector emerged as the leader, with an impressive five-year average TSR of 48%. This was driven by accelerated earnings growth and a positive outlook for the industry. Regulated utilities, on the other hand, had an average TSR of 6% during the same period. Surprisingly, there was a 23% difference in average annual returns between the top and bottom performers in this subsector, despite the regulated returns environment. Integrated ...
... oil and gas companies had an average TSR of 10%, benefiting from higher commodity prices but offset by contracting valuation multiples.

Despite facing challenges such as higher inflation, volatile commodity prices, and evolving policy and regulatory dynamics, certain companies managed to generate exceptional returns compared to their peers. In the clean energy sector, the top performers created ten times more value than the market index over the five-year study period. In oil and gas, the leaders outperformed their peers by approximately 400%, while in utilities, the outperformance was 77%. These findings highlight the importance of strategic decision-making and effective execution in achieving superior performance in the energy industry.
