Mount Kailash, sacred to over a billion Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains, is often regarded as the world's holiest peak. Pilgrims from all over Asia go across the spectacular high-altitude scenery of rural Western Tibet to pay homage and walk around the sacred mountain. It is one of the world's best overland journeys, and despite the elevation, it is surprisingly accessible.

How to Get To Mount Kailash

The ideal option is to fly or train to Lhasa from China or Kathmandu, spend a few days acclimating, and then begin the four-day trip to the peak in remote Western Tibet. On the route, you may see the Tibetan town of Shigatse, the towering old monastery of Sakya, and even the beautiful north face of Everest Base Camp (add two days). Western Tibet's roads have been paved and hotels improved in recent years, making the journey more pleasant and picturesque.

after descending via the stunning Alpine-style Kyirong Valley, which connects the high Tibetan plateau to the edge of the Indian subcontinent.

Several firms in Kathmandu provide overland journeys from Kathmandu to Kailash, but keep in mind that the altitude rise on these trips is potentially perilous; it is advisable to spend a few days in Lhasa exploring its major monastic sites. Acclimatization is especially crucial in Western Tibet, where there is virtually no elevation below 4500m.

Permits to Tibet

To get a Tibet Tourism Bureau permission to visit Tibet, all international tourists must first organize a tour (vehicle, driver, and guide) through a local Tibetan agency. You must pick this up in China or Kathmandu before traveling to Tibet. Your agency may need up to a month to obtain this and other permits for western Tibet. You will also need a valid Chinese visa.

What to Expect on the Mount Kailash Trek?

Traditionally, a Trip to Kailash includes a three-day walk around holy Mt. Kailash and a visit to the sacred Manasarovar Lake in Ngari, western Tibet. The tour includes some of the best features that you can anticipate.

First, join prostrating Tibetan pilgrims on a trip around sacred Mt. Kailash. You will be carefully watching the towering pyramid-shaped peak of Mt. Kailash, which is said to be the "Abode of Lord Shiva," and traveling alongside committed Tibetan pilgrims on an unrivaled spiritual journey around the holy mountain.

Second, you may take in the incredible splendor of Manasarovar Lake. You may take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque beach of Manasarovar Lake or practice meditation here. The lake's sacredness is enhanced by the amazing reflection of Mount Kailash Peak on its surface. On the route, you may see the Tibetan town of Shigatse, the towering old monastery of Sakya, and even the beautiful north face of Everest Base Camp (add two days).
