This is one of the most controversial subjects in the wine industry, specifically in social media, including posts, where the wine reviewing mysteries are a constant source of interest, and sometimes, berate.

So I thought I would give a bit background, after decades as a critic. The concept of a 100 point wine scoring system was invented years before. Most publications use the 100 point system to publish their guidelines for its use, explaining what it is and what it is not. If a wine scored lower than 80 points, it was consigned within our database, where the public would never notice it. It appeared like a matter of primary fairness, not to publish a horrible score, as it can damage the reputation of the winery.

Acceptable wines scored between 80-82 points. If they were one step above that, then good, as they got between 83-86 points. If they were quite good, they scored between 87-89 points. Wines that were great got between 90-93 points. If they were amazing, we scored them between 94-97 points. And at the top, if they were timeless, they earned between 98-100 points. Obviously, we defined those terms. ...
... I always said that the best way of wine review was in blind tastings, the bigger the better, but only up to a point. In my final years as a critic, I decided not to taste more than 25 or 30 wines at a single sitting, so that I don’t tire my palate.

The accurate method will vary at various publications, obviously, but usually, every wine critic works more or less similarly. They have a look at the wine, swirl it, sniff it, sip them and evaluate, gradually leaving lasting impressions in their minds. At one point, the evaluation process ends, and then they do two things. First of all they determine permanent wine critic scores, and write the review. Wine critics try very hard to maintain the relationship between score and review logically consistent. It would be odd, for example, to read that a wine was extremely good and then witness it get 83 points. Similarly, it would be awkward for a wine to be described as a good everyday sipper and then get 98 points. This is why it is not going away pretty soon.

At the end of the day, drinking wine should be fun, and it doesn’t have to be complex. However, if studying wine ratings is your definition of fun, then delve right in there! Take your time to find out the critics you align with, and never get fixated on the ratings as a whole. Moreover, while points are vital and will impart you an idea of where the wine ranks with specific critics, it is vital to understand that most of the wines internationally is not rated.
