Rogers-o'brien Construction Named Winner In The Mid-sized Business Category Of Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards
Rogers-O'Brien Construction (RO) has earned recognition in the Mid-Sized Business category of Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards for their groundbreaking utilization of VigiLife SafeGuard technology to bolster worker safety. In a region plagued by soaring temperatures, with Texas witnessing approximately 300 heat-related deaths in 2022 alone, RO's innovation comes as a beacon of hope.
Prior to this innovation, RO had already instituted annual heat safety training for their 98 craft construction workers, who endure grueling 50 to 60-hour workweeks under the scorching Texas sun. However, Ross Daly, the Director of Safety at Rogers-O'Brien Construction, acknowledges that while training and awareness are crucial, they have their limitations. Thus, seeking to surpass the brilliance of the sun itself, RO embraced VigiLife SafeGuard, a wearable sensor engineered to revolutionize worker safety through real-time analytics and alerts. In the summer of 2023, Rogers-O'Brien became the inaugural general contractor to deploy SafeGuard technology across its workforce.
The device, seamlessly integrated with a smartwatch, ...
... operates akin to a fitness application, meticulously monitoring biometrics such as heart rate and core body temperature. It proactively notifies workers when they need to moderate their exertion levels and, at more critical thresholds, alerts the on-site safety manager to swiftly relocate the affected worker to a cooled environment for recovery. This proactive approach aims to mitigate heat-related issues before they escalate into emergencies.
Heat-related illnesses not only compromise worker well-being but also inflate project costs due to productivity losses, medical expenses, and accident inquiries. Daly emphatically underscores that safety remains the company's foremost priority, emphasizing that "if it prevents even one heat-related illness, the system pays for itself."
Todd Wynne, Chief Innovation Officer at Rogers-O'Brien, asserts, "We are at the vanguard of a new era in worker safety." He extols SafeGuard technology for its capacity to preempt heat-related risks and safeguard employees like never before. As the pioneering general contractor to embrace this transformative solution, RO is setting a precedent for the industry while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to ensuring the well-being of its workforce, affirming Wynne's conviction to "send everyone home daily.
