Entrepreneurship In The Mba World: From Idea To Start-up
The aspirations and results of MBA students are not aligned. Although about one-third of MBA candidates attend management school to hone their entrepreneurial abilities, less than 5% of MBA graduates go on to launch their own companies.
Such a significant decline makes sense. Indeed, post-MBA professional pathways like consulting or finance offer substantial starting salaries and a quick return on investment, making them constantly appealing fields—especially for business school graduates with debt to repay—even if between 60 and 90 percent of businesses fail.
However, they might be ignoring the fact that an MBA is often the ideal starting point for a firm. Additionally, learning essential skills from entrepreneurship can help you in any field you choose in the future.
For aspiring MBA students, cultivating entrepreneurial abilities continues to be of low importance. Out of the 10 motivations given by students, it ranked as the eighth most popular motivator in a survey. The reasons for students' decision to pursue graduate business education varied but included things like pay, work opportunities abroad, ...
... and faster career advancement.
It's also challenging to shake the widespread perception that MBA programs are closely related to finance and consulting. For many years, these have been the sectors of choice for the majority of graduates.
However, the sector no longer provides the same promises for MBA graduates as it previously did in a situation where consulting firms are postponing the hiring of MBAs and freezing starting pay. And for those who do decide to pursue entrepreneurship, firms started by MBAs do have a better chance of success than others.
The absence of a safety net is possibly one of the main reasons why entrepreneurial goals are rarely pursued after college. For students, starting a company rather than landing a full-time job will always be risky. The best time to explore a business concept is during your time in business school.
However, an MBA is not only a backup plan for prospective business owners. For entrepreneurs, the program itself provides advantages that you would not otherwise be able to obtain. One of the main advantages of an MBA is its network, which extends far beyond the confines of a business school.
Learning about entrepreneurship does not require you to launch a company. Being an entrepreneur is a life talent that is beneficial to any kind of organization.
The importance of being an entrepreneur goes beyond quick financial gains. Students who engage in entrepreneurship also learn how to innovate, adapt new business models, and act fast in response to market demands.
