Today, we journey through the rugged terrain of the Himalayas, where weather condition changes within a few minutes as we can say unpredictable weather. As we travel through this majestic landscape, expect a mix of clear skies, occasional gusts of wind, and scattered clouds casting shadows on the snow-capped peaks.

Road conditions may vary, with stretches of smooth asphalt contrasting with rugged, unpaved sections, requiring caution in navigation. Stay tuned for updates on road closures, avalanche risks, and any weather advisories as we explore the unparalleled beauty of Lahaul & Spiti, a district located in the higher hills of Himachal Pradesh. Being present in the higher hills of the Himalayas we observe the beautiful Mountains, valleys, and scenery. But being present on higher hills of the Himalayas residents or visitors observe a sudden change in Weather. besides its natural beauty, this area witnessed various tragedies like avalanches, landslides, etc. due to its ever-changing weather conditions.

... status provided by Lahaul & Spiti police on 15 April until 0900 hrs. There are several observations and updates on the weather conditions and road statuses across various districts of Himachal Pradesh. Areas of Keylong, Kaza, and Sumdo experience different weather patterns, with Keylong encountering rainfall, while Kazaa and Sumdo report cloudy conditions which lead to diffused sunlight and cooler temperatures across these areas of Kaza & Sumdo of Himachal Pradesh. Despite the varying weather, the road status at these stations remains open, allowing for uninterrupted travel for visitors as well as residents. The area of Udaipur and Tindi similar to the area of Keylong, experience light rainfall while rain can make roads slippery and affect visibility, the road status at these locations is reported as “ Through” indicating that no road closures or obstructions while traveling through these roads. Also, the residents and visitors of this area will not face any difficulty due to road blockage.


These roads are opened till another order is passed by the District Disaster Management Authority of Himachal Pradesh. As per the report published on 12th April Surrender Paul, the director of the Meteorological Center at Shimla attributed the shift in weather conditions between 13th April to 15th April 2024. And also from 18th April a Western Cylonic Disturbance will likely change the weather pattern of Himachal Pradesh. A western cyclonic disturbance refers to a weather phenomenon characterized by the movement of a cyclonic circulation system from west to east. This disturbance typically originated from the Mediterranean Sea or northern Africa and traveled eastward, affecting regions such as the Middle East, South Asia, and parts of Southeast Asia. this disturbance often brings significant changes in weather patterns, leading to precipitation, strong winds, and fluctuation in temperatures.


The impact of western cyclonic disturbance varies depending on factors such as the intensity of the system, the topography of the affected region, and the time of year. In some cases, these disturbances can lead to heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas. India Meteorological agencies closely monitor western cyclonic disturbances and issue warnings and advisories to help mitigate their impact on the communities and infrastructure. Additionally, forecasting models are used to trace the movement and intensity of these disturbances, providing valuable information for disaster preparedness and response efforts.

The area of Sisu, North Portal, or South Portal experiences Rainfall as usual like yesterday, and rainfall leads to wet or slippery road conditions. However, despite the rain, the road status is reported as “Through” which means these roads are also open for visitors and residents to travel but travelers are advised to exercise caution due to wet road conditions, which may increase the risk of accidents in these areas of Himachal Pradesh. And in these areas, visitors and Residents will also not suffer due to road blockage. These roads are also opened till further orders are passed by the District Disaster Management Authority of Himachal Pradesh.


The area of SCP Darcha experienced snowfall according to the report published by Lahaul & Spiti police and the report says snowfall recorded in this area is a depth of half an inch. This might affect the road conditions of this area, especially in mountainous regions where snow accumulation may occur. And snowfall also reduces traction & visibility. The road status is marked “As per Advisory” indicating that the traveler should proceed with proper care and caution by following the advisory report passed by the concerned authority of that particular area. Travelers are advised to proceed with caution, especially in areas experiencing snowfall.

The report given by Lahaul & Spiti police provides specific remarks regarding road conditions and accessibility to different areas. like ATR North Portal to Darcha Road are open and SKTT from Tandi to Kadhu Nullah is open for visitors as well as residents. And Darcha to Shinkula Road is open for vehicles with four-wheel drive. Sumdo to Lossar road is accessible. These roads are open till further order from the District Disaster Management Authority. This condition will be affected by the upcoming western cyclonic disturbance. Whereas, Darcha to Sarchu Road and Losser to Gramphu Road remain closed due to unfavourable weather conditions or road maintenance.
