HealthpointCapital, the top private equity firm specializing in musculoskeletal healthcare, has just announced that they have acquired a majority stake in SteriCUBE Holdings, Inc.

The SteriCUBE® Multiple Tray Sterilization (MTS) System is an innovative technology that allows for the simultaneous sterilization of instrument-holding trays. These trays are crucial for organizing and protecting the various instruments used in orthopaedic and cardiac surgeries.

Traditionally, hospitals have been using polypropylene and paper material, commonly referred to as "blue wrap," to wrap sterilized instrument trays. This method has been in practice for over 75 years and serves as a barrier against outside air. Each tray is carefully wrapped by hand with two layers of material, which typically amounts to 18 to 32 square feet. Multiple trays are needed for each surgery, and the disposable wraps are discarded after a single use. This contributes to a staggering 20% of all operating room waste, equivalent to an estimated 255 million pounds annually.1 Moreover, blue wrap is prone to perforations, which can compromise the sterility of the enclosed instruments. When perforations occur, which happens more than 10% of the time, surgical procedures are often delayed, resulting in significant costs.
