Wing-shooters and hunters all have their preferences when it comes to what species they prefer above all others, as much as they may prefer visiting one hunting lodge and not any other. Therefore dove shoot in Alabama may, for some wing-shooters, always stand out above other options.

DOVE

Many wing-shooters prefer to hunt dove, as opposed to other species. Different types can be hunted, of which the mourning dove stands out for many. This dove is discerned from others by, firstly, its cooing call, which is typically described as sad or mournful, hence the name mourning dove, and secondly by certain physical traits. These include its length, which is measured between 9 and 13 inches, and its wingspan which can reach 18 inches. The body is grayish brown, and its pointed tail long. The head is small and round, and the bird reminds me of the common pigeon; it belongs to the pigeon order Columbiformes.

Dove meat is popular as it is lean and does not have too much fat to worry about, with a rich flavor that reminds of other game species. Several recipes ensure that you have great choices when preparing dove meat, ...
... for example, breast seared in butter with garlic and fresh herbs of your choice. It is easy to prepare, and tasty, which partly explains its popularity as a bird that wing-shooters find attractive.

THE LODGE

Choosing the best wing-shooting lodge for your visit is important for the visitor. You want to know that you visit a lodge in which feedback is positive all the time, especially if you do not have the opportunity to hunt regularly. Throughout the South – and elsewhere in the country – lodges compete for business and advertise in the press, and on the internet, and they rely on word of mouth to attract visitors. That is why it is good to know what other wing-shooters and hunters may have to say about lodges, also the one you may be considering.

It is only fair to expect that the lodge that sells itself as a top destination, should meet certain requirements for the dove shooter, the quail shooter, the pheasant shooter, and any other shooter or hunter that pays good money in the hopes of enjoying a positive experience and great time when they make a booking at a lodge.

You certainly want to know what accommodation is available, since not everybody expects, or is happy with, the same accommodation. This goes for food and service as well. But, more importantly, you want to know and gain knowledge about the birds you are about to hunt. What do management – and past visitors - have to say about the quality of their doves, their pheasants, quails, and other species? Do you feel convinced that you will leave with what you came for? Have you studied the lodge’s bag limits and any other pertinent information that may influence your decision and choice?

These issues are important because, after all, a few wing shooters and hunters get several opportunities during the year to break away from their responsibilities.

SUPPORT

It is fair to expect that the lodge where you will hunt or shoot offers you minimum support regarding issues that can make your experience so much more positive and pleasant. For example: how do you get to your shooting position? Is transport provided? Are there guides around, does the lodge have hunting dogs that you may use to fetch downed birds? Will personnel help clean and package the birds?

All of these issues can contribute to a good visit – or not. Reasonable support to ensure a positive experience should be given, which is why the best lodges make sure they support the visitors’ efforts to be successful as much as possible.
Shooting doves – and other birds – in Alabama is right up there with other options most favored by wing shooters, which is why lodges in this state get busy during the season.
