Prisons often haunted by the spirits of those who are imprisoned within the walls of the facility that contained them. Moundsville Penitentiary is well known as haunted prison and kept abandoned. The prison held most violent killers, rapists, and other criminals, many of whom never left the institution alive, and some were died. These horrible spirits still haunts Moundsville Penitentiary.

The West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville was built in 1876, the prison well known as one of the most violent prisons in the U.S.A. because of riots, murders and executions. Most of the violence took place in the basement, a room ‘Sugar Shack’. The room is for illegal gambling, drug deals, rape, fighting, and murder. Today, visitors report hearing disembodied arguing, silent talking, and ghostly whispering in this room. The prison saw 36 reported murders and 94 executions and also the suicides and accidents that take the total number of deaths to nearly 1000. Executions carried out by hanging the convicted until 1951. By 1986, the prison was overcrowded like more than 2,000 men. During this time, security was loose and described as out of hands like where most of the locks on the cells had been picked, and prisoners roamed the halls freely.

The West Virginia Penitentiary is now utilized for tourism and as a museum.
