Fibroids-causes, Complications And Treatment
A uterine fibroid is the most common benign or non cancerous tumor of a woman\'s uterus. Fibroids are tumors of the smooth
muscle that is normally found in the wall of the uterus. They can develop within the uterine wall itself or attach to it.
They may grow as a single tumor or in clusters. Uterine fibroids can cause excessive menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and
frequent urination; so even though they are termed \"benign tumors,\" fibroids potentially can be very fatal.
The exact reasons why some women develop fibroids are unknown.
href="http://www.mrtherapycentre.com/current-treatment-option-for-firboids.php">Fibroids tend to run in families, and
affected women often have a family history of fibroids. Fibroids grow in response to stimulation by the hormone estrogen,
produced naturally in the body. These growths can show up as early as age 20 and shrink after menopause when the body stops
producing large amounts of estrogen. Fibroids can be tiny and cause no problems, but they also can grow to weigh several
pounds. They usually grow slowly.
Fibroids ...
... are composed of uterine smooth muscle cells. It is not known whether the initial or ongoing stimulus is genetic,
viral, inflammatory repair of normal cell loss or any other cause. Birth control pills probably play a role in stimulating
fibroid growth and the fibroids may regress in size when the pills are stopped. It was previously thought that just estrogen
was necessary for growth but it now appears the progesterone is critical to fibroid growth.
The different types of fibroids are
classified according to their location:
Submucosal varieties grow on the inside of the womb.
Suberosal neoplasms develop on the outer wall of the uterus.
Intramural types grow in the uterus wall muscles.
Pedunculated varieties are attached to the uterus by stems.
Most Fibroids do not interfere with pregnancy, but size and location can cause complications. The extra blood flow to the
womb during pregnancy can stimulate tumor growth. Occasionally, caesarean sections may be required to counteract
complications. Possible complications include miscarriage, premature contractions, and premature labor.
There are also some fibroid
treatment options available to cure fibroids. Some of them are mentioned as under:
Hysterectomy- where the uterus is removed from the body. As the uterus is removed from the body, a women can never conceive a child.
Abdominal myomectomy: In this treatment Fibroids are removed with open abdominal surgery.
Laparoscopic or hysteroscopic myomectomy: With this one or more of the fibroids are removed using laparoscopic or
endoscopic techniques.
Hormone therapy: In hormone therapy the patient is recommended GnRH drug treatment that causes fibroid shrinkage.
Uterine artery embolisation: In this treatment the uterine artery is blocked with polyvinyl alcohol beads so the
fibroid is starved.
MR Guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery: In this surgical treatment the physicians use a focused ultrasound waves to heat and destroy fibroid tissue. MRI images are used for treatment planning and feedback.
