About Martial Arts And Your Options
People take part in activities such as, say, martial arts, for a number of reasons. For some it is a great way to get exercise, for some it is about competition, and for some, martial arts are a great way to sharpen up their self-defence skills. Therefore there will always be enthusiasts that will be looking for the best place to enrol for martial arts classes in London, or in Birmingham, Manchester, and elsewhere.
CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS
There are many options to choose from once you have decided that you are interested in martial arts. There are also many reasons why one could be interested in one or more of the close to 200 martial arts disciplines. Options include those that most people have heard about, such as judo or karate, or kickboxing and other forms of martial arts. There are also hybrid forms of the traditional martial arts so that combinations are offered. Think, for example, of karate combined with boxing and kickboxing, or other options. All martial arts contain elements of fighting, and often for reasons such as self-defence, but there are many other reasons why individuals feel drawn to these sports.
CAN ...
... ANYONE TAKE PART IN MARTIAL ARTS?
Depending on the discipline that interests you, the quick answer would be “yes”, anyone can get involved. Normally, younger individuals start out taking part because physically they are able as they are stronger or fitter than their senior counterparts, whereas older people can remain active in the discipline they have chosen well into their senior years. Also, because there are more issues to consider than fighting or self-defence, martial arts can be studied or enjoyed by many who are no longer physically all that active, since martial arts teach followers about many other aspects of their life.
Most martial arts disciplines can, therefore, be practiced well into the advanced years. Issues such as teaching followers about, say, keeping balance, improving coordination, especially for older people and the very young child of even three years old, can be valuable. Improving self-confidence and a higher sense of self-worth are further benefits to be derived from attending martial arts classes in London and elsewhere. Age, therefore, does not limit anyone.
THE MOST IMPORTANT REASONS FOR ATTENDING MARTIAL ARTS CLASS
For most people self-defence is high up on the list. When you know you are able to defend yourself, that you have the knowledge and skills to protect yourself in potentially dangerous circumstances, you are more prepared to go out, to venture away from what you know and to know that the fighting skills you learn during martial arts class may well save you from adversity. Add to that other important reasons why people attend these classes, and it makes a lot of sense why martial arts everywhere is growing in popularity.
Parents send their young children to class, since martial arts teach them valuable lessons about, say, self-confidence, courage and concentration, which are life skills not always taught at home or during school hours. Martial arts are steeped in history, with a strong emphasis on what important life values the old masters have taught their followers for centuries, and values such as integrity, honour and compassion are often included in teaching little children and teenagers – and adults – some important lessons about how to behave as a decent human being.
And, of course, testing yourself against your own abilities and shortcomings always forms an important part of wanting to attend martial arts classes. This is best seen in the different gradings right from the entry level to black belts and higher dans which you qualify for in terms of how good your technique is in your discipline, as well as how well you perform in self-defence and sparring, for example. Some martial arts styles require a deep understanding and knowledge of their discipline before the student is ready to receive the next belt in karate and other disciplines, for example.
