Fused deposition modeling (FDM), also referred to as material extrusion additive manufacturing, employs polymers as its primary raw material in the form of filament. This filament is heated to a molten state and then extruded through the machine's nozzle, typically a 3D printer. The nozzle's movement is controlled in three dimensions, allowing it to deposit the molten polymer onto the build plate based on instructions provided in G-code format. The continuous feed of filament through the extruder and nozzle is facilitated by two rollers rotating in opposite directions.

Layer-by-layer, the material is deposited onto the build plate until the desired shape and size of the product are attained. Throughout this process, the printer nozzle traverses back and forth following the spatial coordinates outlined in the original CAD model within the G-code files. Once printing is completed, components are typically detached from the build plate, either by snapping them off or through a detergent soaking process, depending on the type of thermoplastic used. Subsequently, the printed components may undergo surface cleaning, sanding, painting, or milling procedures to enhance both their appearance and functionality.
