Microsoft and Vodafone have entered into a 10-year strategic partnership, aiming to provide digital solutions to over 300 million businesses, public sector organizations, and consumers across Europe and Africa. Vodafone will invest $1.5 billion in cloud and AI services developed in collaboration with Microsoft over the partnership's duration.

Key areas of focus include leveraging generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) to enhance customer experiences, with Vodafone's digital assistant TOBi powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI capabilities. The partnership will also see Microsoft investing in Vodafone's managed IoT connectivity platform, connecting 175 million devices globally, and Vodafone becoming part of the Azure ecosystem.

The collaboration plans to hyperscale Vodafone's IoT connectivity platform, develop new digital and financial services, and revamp its global data center cloud strategy. Microsoft's investment in Vodafone's managed IoT connectivity platform is set to create a separate business entity by April 2024.

In addition, the partnership aims to expedite Vodafone's cloud transformation by modernizing ...

The joint efforts extend to Africa, with plans to scale M-Pesa, the continent's largest financial technology platform, on Azure. New cloud-native applications will be launched, benefiting 100 million consumers and 1 million SMEs. The collaboration also focuses on improving digital literacy, skilling, youth outreach programs, and fostering financial services innovation.

Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone's Group Chief Executive, emphasized the commitment to the digital future of Europe and Africa, particularly for small and medium-sized companies. Satya Nadella, Microsoft's Chairman and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about applying cloud and AI technology to enhance customer experiences, build new products and services, and accelerate the transition to the cloud for millions of individuals and businesses globally.
