Sarnath is one of the major pilgrimages for the Buddhists for that is the vicinity wherein Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. When Xuan Zang visited Sarnath, the region changed into a thriving center of Buddhism with 1500 priests living there. But Buddhism went into decline after the Muslim invaders ransacked the town. Archaeological Excavations in Sarnath
