It may not seem to be big news, but trust me it is. One of the most heated rivalries in the land of college football which has been on hiatus since 1990 is about to begin once again, as the Miami Hurricanes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish have agreed to terms to once again begin a series of games against each other, bringing back one of the biggest rivalries of the 1980s, when the two were both national powerhouses.

Things may be a tad different now, as both programs are trying to restore the winning ways of the 1980s and 1990s, but the luster is not lost whatsoever. These are still two of the biggest names clashing once again, after over a 20 year hiatus. The series will kick off in 2012, with the teams clashing at Soldier Field in Chicago, a neutral site game that will foreshadow the things to come. The teams will then play a home and home in 2016 and 2017, the first being in South Bend.

Notre Dame currently holds a 15-7-1 record in the series, but near the end of it, it was Miami who dominated. In 1985, Notre Dame was walloped by a score of 58-7, in what was Garry Faust's last game as Fighting Irish head coach. ...
... Lou Holtz became coach afterwords, and restored the national championship capabilities of the school. Notre Dame won big games in 1988, a game that featured a shoving match between the teams, and in 1990, a game that knocked Miami out of the title picture for that season.

But it all hasn't been Notre Dame in the series that was dubbed ‘Catholics vs Convicts', by some. Miami dominated the majority of the rest of the 1980s, defeating the Irish in each of the three seasons that Miami scored their national titles, big victories each time out that helped propel the squad to the big game each time.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out from here, with both schools working to restore a winning image that was lost for a few seasons recently. Miami is a top 25 team this season, and Notre Dame begins another era under a new coach this season, Brian Kelly. We can only hope that by the time 2012 comes, both teams have the winning record to go along with the prestige, giving this game all the more meaning.
