Global Market For Autoimmune Disease Diagnostics Is Projected To Progress With Healthy Growth Rate During 2019–2030
Autoimmune diseases have a significant impact on the quality of life since they last a lifetime and aren’t even curable. Some of the most-common of these are rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain–Barre syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, Addison’s disease, celiac disease, Behcet's syndrome, Graves’ disease, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, Sjögren’s syndrome, type 1 diabetes, and systemic lupus erythematosus. They can destroy body tissue, cause some organs to grow abnormally, and alter normal organ function.
Since there is no cure for these conditions, it is important to keep the symptoms in check and prevent complications. This fact has been cited by P&S Intelligence to forecast an 8.5% CAGR for the autoimmune disease diagnostics market till 2030. At this rate, the revenue generated from the sale of diagnostic products will likely rise from $4,086.2 million in 2019 to $10,012.9 million by 2030. This is because effective diagnosis is the first step in controlling these conditions, especially since nobody knows for sure why they occur. Everyone knows that these diseases involve the immune system attacking ...
... healthy cells, but the answer to ‘why’ hasn’t yet been found.
Like most diseases, the first step in diagnosing an autoimmune condition is ascertaining whether someone has an autoimmune disease at all. After this is confirmed, further tests are conducted to diagnose the specific disease. For this purpose, a range of tests are done, including routine laboratory, inflammatory markers, human leukocyte antigen (HLA), antibody and immunology, flow cytometry, cytokine, and extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) panel. Among them, routine laboratory tests are the most-widely performed as they are common to most autoimmune diseases.
To offer more-reliable results, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of life of those inflicted by autoimmune diseases, life sciences and biotechnology companies are working hard to discover and invent new biomarkers. For instance, a February 2020 article in the journal The Egyptian Rheumatologist evaluated the usage of IL-33 for the diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, since children with this disease are found to have high levels of this pro-inflammatory protein in their blood. Similarly, in 2019, researchers at the University of Alberta identified a new biomarker for myasthenia gravis, which can also be used for its prognosis.
Such extensive research and development (R&D) is being facilitated by the increasing government and private spending on healthcare. As per the latest WHO report, worldwide healthcare expenditure rose to $8.3 trillion in 2018, accounting for around 10% of the global GDP. The government not only spends on establishing new hospitals and diagnostic laboratories, but also on research grants across various medical fields, including autoimmune diseases. As per the NIH, it offered $2.9 billion worth of medical research grants in 2020, compared to $798 million in grants in 2015.
Since the U.S. accounts for the highest healthcare spending, North America has been the largest autoimmune disease diagnostics market till now, and the situation will likely not change in the next 10 years. According to the WHO, in 2019, 70.28% of the global healthcare research grant amount was given for non-communicable diseases, which include autoimmune diseases. Moreover, the top 12 universities, in terms of the grant amount received, were all from the U.S. Additionally, as per Bingham Memorial Hospital, the incidence of such conditions in the U.S. has risen from 1 in 400 people in 1977 to 1 in 12 people presently
