What Is Premenstrual Syndrome (pms) And How To Treat It?

Premenstrual syndrome is a syndrome that occurs in a woman within 2 to 14 days of the onset of periodic cycle. Premenstrual syndrome is also known as PMS is a series of physical, emotional and psychological symptoms which are related to the menstrual cycle. Only 2 to 5 % women suffer from significant Premenstrual syndromes. Otherwise signs of healthy periods are the normal discomforts. The PMS symptoms have enough severity to interrupt with some of the aspects in life. Premenstrual Syndrome can lead to psychological and emotional imbalances like frequent mood swings, depression, over sensitivity, irritability etc. An even severe symptom of PMS is referred to as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
The symptoms caused by PMS can be of great variety varying in intensity and duration from one cycle to another. The most common mood related symptoms as mentioned above are tension, depression, anger, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, hypersensitivity, crying etc. The common physical signs of PMS are changes in appetite, craving for food, gaining of weight, fatigue, sleeping disorder, acne skin, tenderness of breasts, bloating, ...
... cramps, constipation, muscle pain, joint pain etc. In case of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder the symptoms are so severe that it may lead to significant functional loss. But this Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder occurs in very lesser number of women.
The real cause for PMS is still an enigma. It is because of its diversified symptoms it is hard to determine the exact cause of Premenstrual syndrome. Family history is often considered to be a probable factor contributing to Premenstrual syndrome. Other factors leading to the onset of Premenstrual syndrome are intake of caffeine in high level, usage of tobacco. Stress can also precipitate such condition. So it is common among those having history of depression and bipolar disorder. Increase in age and dietary imbalance can induce this condition. If the diet is low in minerals like manganese, magnesium etc and Vitamins like vitamin E and vitamin B then it can be a resulting factor for PMS. However, most scientists believe that PMS results due to alteration in brain chemical and sex hormone. Some also like to believe that PMS is not related to psychological disorder.
Once PMS is firmly diagnosed there are several ways of treating it. The cure to it is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise can help a lot. If the patient is a smoker she should immediately quit smoking and take the help of a medical professional to treat this as soon as possible.
