Using ISO 9001 as a Quality Management System can help your organization. The ISO 9001 Standard is commonly misunderstood as a document nightmare. The standard has very few document requirements. So, how might applying ISO 9001 improve your company's competitiveness?

Implementing ISO 9001 Can Increase Your Company's Competitiveness
Why not just state "implementing ISO 9001?" instead of "becoming certified?" Although obtaining accreditation for your Quality Management System is desirable, it should not be the end goal of adopting the standard. Organizations that use ISO 9001 for the sole purpose of obtaining ISO 9001 certification are passing on a huge chance for growth. ISO 9001, as usually remarked, is a journey.

If you begin honestly adopting ISO 9001 as a business improvement tool, acquiring certification later on, if you choose to do so, should be a simple step. That is why it was established. It is well-recognised as a tried-and-true method of improving your business via the use of systems and processes. It can make your organization more effective, and hence more competitive.

By Using Process ...
... Approach
One of the first tasks in adopting ISO 9001 is to define and determine the organization's key processes. Consider the value of simply conducting this introspective exercise: determining what is important to the organization and its consumers. When goals and objectives are attached to these procedures and communicated throughout the organization, everyone instantly understands what is important and what they should be focusing on and working towards.

PDCA
In this context, we can see how applying the process method to understanding organizational functions can yield positive results. Consider utilising a process approach that is always improving, which is another ISO 9001 cornerstone. With a procedure that is always being improved (also known as PDCA or Plan Do Check Act);
• A detailed strategy is developed for how each process should be carried out (Plan).
• Process operations are carried out while vital information is captured (Do)
• Process results are reviewed regularly, with actual results compared to the plan (Check)
• Lessons learnt from reviews are used to improve performance (Act).

Satisfied Customers are the Most Important People in Your Business.
Understanding client requirements is another important aspect of the ISO 9001 Standard that can boost competitiveness. Several ISO 9001 mandatory records are concerned with gathering and assessing client requirements. How many times has your company been caught off guard by a misunderstanding of what your customers want and need? How many times do you want it to occur? Implementing the clearly stated customer emphasis in ISO 9001 (together with the always developing process philosophy) will make it happen less frequently until it occurs only seldom or never at all.

The earlier errors or errors in client needs are identified, the easier and less expensive it will be to remedy them. Most of you have probably heard of the 1-10-100 rule. (Mistakes caught in production are ten times more expensive to fix than mistakes caught in design, and mistakes caught by the customer are one hundred times more expensive to fix.)
Improving the focus on understanding client requirements, as required by ISO 9001, gives two significant advantages:
• Significant savings by detecting errors and oversights earlier;
• Improved customer satisfaction as a result of clients being extremely delighted with the items and services they purchase. Consider how being very effective in these two areas might boost your organization's competitiveness.

ISO 9001 Can Help Your Business Competition
