The recent narrative at OpenAI has taken an unexpected turn with the swift return of co-founder Sam Altman to the CEO position, just days after his abrupt dismissal by the board. OpenAI made the surprising announcement of Altman's reinstatement, accompanied by the revelation that new board members would be appointed as part of the reinstatement deal.

The initial turmoil unfolded when Altman was ousted, sparking a strong reaction from OpenAI's workforce who penned an open letter demanding his reinstatement, with the implicit threat of a mass exodus of 97% of employees. The situation escalated with the resignation of co-founder Greg Brockman, deepening the organizational crisis.

Adding a layer of complexity, Ilya Sutskever, another co-founder and chief scientist, expressed regret over Altman's removal and joined a staff letter urging the board to reconsider. During this period, Altman quickly secured a prominent position to lead a new advanced AI research team at Microsoft, further complicating the unfolding drama.

On November 22nd, OpenAI made a surprising announcement of a comprehensive restructuring of ...
... its board of directors, culminating in Altman's unanimous reinstatement. Interim CEO Emmett Shear expressed his support for the decision, even declaring his intent to resign if the board couldn't adequately justify Altman's removal. Altman's return, following a reported "72 very intense hours of work," was met with a deeply satisfied response from the interim CEO.

As part of the reshuffling, new board members were introduced, including Bret Taylor, former co-CEO of Salesforce, and Larry Summers, former US treasury secretary. Remarkably, even Brockman, the former president who had resigned, announced his return to the company. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella applauded the changes, seeing them as a crucial step toward achieving more stable, well-informed, and effective governance.

Altman, expressing his excitement on social media, reiterated his commitment to OpenAI and its mission. The entire episode underscores the intricate dynamics and challenges inherent in the leadership transitions of cutting-edge AI companies.
