Every road-tripper dreams to drive on Canadian roads. If you want to see this beautiful country thoroughly, hiring a camper van or a car would be the best way. Canada is the second largest country in the world and so you must plan well beforehand to cover the great distances. Also, having a good knowledge of the country’s driving rules would be an added advantage.

Let’s have a quick discussion on making your Canada trip a memorable one.
Canadian roads

The roads in Canada stretch more than one million kilometers and the distance includes the great Trans-Canada Highway. The roads are well maintained. Considering the geography and size of the country, the road network is denser in the southern part as well as around important cities than that of the rest of the country. Below are the main road types in Canada about which students are being taught in Driving School Scarborough.

• Local roads– Having low traffic speeds, these roads are meant to give access to private properties. They are seen in rural areas and suburbs. The roads have no less ...
... than one sidewalk.

• Minor arterial roads – Having sidewalks on both sides, such roads are meant to facilitate traffic movement and provide access to specific types of properties. You won’t find any STOP sign here. Rather they are managed by traffic lights.

• Major arterial roads – These are designed for proper traffic movement. The drivers have to wait in line or at the light before entering the traffic flow. One can maintain a speed limit of 50 km/hr to 60 km/hr on such roads.

• Collector roads – These are meant to connect traffic to arteries. They have signals at the crossings with arterial roads. They have sidewalks.

• Expressways – They are somehow the same as British motorways. You can maintain a speed limit of 80 km/hr to 100 km/hr on these roads. The roads don’t provide any property access. No pedestrians and cyclists are allowed on these roads.

Good driving on Canadian roads

You can navigate throughout Canada by car. It won’t be a big deal if you have good driving knowledge to drive on Canadian roads. Or else, you can join a driving school for a short course. Be especially focused on road safety and defensive driving.

You might have to hire an automated transmission vehicle in Canada instead of a manual car that you might have used in Europe. Automatic cars give the freedom of driving without much trouble. Such cars come very useful while driving a long distance. Since you have to cover long distances in Canada, always choose a sensible route and carry sufficient food, water, and fuel in the car. And if you’re driving during winter, then you should be more careful and prepared for breakdowns. Don’t forget to take winter tyres and chains. Take GPS fails, torch, and snow scrapers. During winter, wearing warm clothes is unavoidable. Also, you may face wild animals such as elks and moose wandering onto the roads and this is a real concern in Canada, mainly at night. So, for night driving, stay more cautious.

As already said, most road-trippers dream to drive on Canadian roads. And they can make their dreams true safely and successfully. All they need to know is the driving rules and regulations of driving in Canada.
