The 1983 World Series Of Poker

The World Series of Poker is an event that allows poker players around the world to come and test their skills against the most talented players that the world has to offer. The players each give an entry fee that contributes to the pot of prize money available to the top players in the tournament. In 1983 the tournament was held with a pot of more than 1 million dollars. 1 million dollars is a lot of money by today's standards, but in 1983 that sum was worth even more than it is today.
The 1983 World Series of Poker tournament provided a huge field of more than 100 players vying for the title. This huge total included many former champions of the tournament. From the very beginning players were falling quickly By the end of the first day of the tournament the field had been reduced by 37 players. The nature of the tournament includes luck, so even some of the top players in the world at that time were eliminated early on the first day. The second day continued with the excitement.
The second day predictably brought more players falling. Several former World Series of Poker champions were eliminated and the tournament ...
... field was being whittled down little by little. The third day's end left just 9 people at the tournament to advance to the final game of the World Series of Poker in 1983.
It was clear as the last table played out that Rod Peate had the big advantage. He had collected nearly 400 thousand dollars through the tournament. This total game him far more money than any other player remaining in the 9 player field. The next best player had nearly 150 thousand dollars less to work with. That money would be enough to keep Peate rolling through the tournament as the players around him kept falling. Meanwhile, the other contenders without that sort of money coming into the table began to drop out. As the day progressed George Huber and R.R. Pennington were eliminated. Within an hour two more players, Don O'Dea and Austin Squatty were also headed home. Time progressed to leave only two players standing at the table, Rod Peate and Tom McEvoy. The winner of these two players would be the 1983 World Series of Poker Champion.
The match between these two players was tough and seemed to go on forever. The players continued to duel and to try to make the moves necessary to take the advantage in the match. As mentioned before, Peate had collected all of that money earlier in the tournament which put him in good position to advance to the point where he would take on McEvoy. The match between them was played well ,but in the end Rod Peate, a former World Series of Poker champion, was not able to hold on. Tom McEvoy was able to go the distance and take out Rod Peate in the process of becoming the World Series of Poker Champion in 1983.
