Ge Healthcare Announces Study Results Demonstrating Portrait Mobile Continuous Monitoring Solution Performance With Patients And Care Teams In The War

GE HealthCare conducted a pilot study in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic to assess the performance of their Portrait Mobile wireless and wearable monitoring solution. The study, known as COSMOS (Continuous Ward Monitoring with the GE HealthCare Portrait Mobile Monitoring Solution) Phase 1, focused on monitoring post-surgical patients' vital signs, including respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and pulse rate, using the Portrait Mobile system. The study results showed that continuous monitoring with Portrait Mobile produced valuable data for optimizing alarm settings within the hospital ward. These optimized alarms could help reduce non-actionable alarms, minimize alarm fatigue, and enhance patient care. The data from this study was presented at the ASA 2023 Annual Meeting.

The Principal Investigator of the study, Dr. Daniel Sessler from the Cleveland Clinic, highlighted the limitations of intermittent vital sign monitoring, which often misses abnormalities. The study identified alert thresholds that can detect potentially serious issues without overwhelming nurses with unnecessary alarms.
One of the challenges in healthcare settings is alarm management, which can lead to alarm fatigue and burnout among healthcare professionals. Alarm rates in intensive care and cardiac telemetry units are often reported to be very high, with hundreds of alarms per bed per day. The COSMOS study utilized alarm burden analytics to evaluate how different factors, including physiologic data, alarm delays, and alarm thresholds, influenced the number of alarms generated by the Portrait Mobile system. The study found that, on average, patients initially received seven alarms per day. However, after adjusting thresholds for patients experiencing alarm fatigue, the average dropped to three alarms per day, or roughly one alarm every eight hours, per patient.
Addressing alarm fatigue and burnout is crucial, as healthcare providers often report that they have limited time to care for patients and their families, exacerbating workforce shortages and reducing the quality of care provided.
GE HealthCare emphasized the importance of having a technically robust monitoring system with properly configured physiologic thresholds to build trust among caregivers and facilitate timely interventions. The COSMOS Phase 1 study results represent a significant step in configuring the Portrait Mobile system to optimize continuous physiologic monitoring in the hospital ward environment.
