Belgian SpaceTech company EDGX and BrainChip Holdings Ltd have announced a collaboration to develop data processing units for space applications. As space infrastructure plays an increasingly vital role in various sectors, including global navigation, weather forecasting, communications, climate monitoring, and disaster response, there is a growing demand for innovative solutions within the space industry.

EDGX aims to address this demand by developing a new data processing unit concept that combines classic AI acceleration with neuromorphic computing. The goal is to reduce onboard AI power consumption, enhance adaptability, and enable autonomous learning capabilities in next-generation satellites. This approach involves creating intelligent space systems inspired by the human brain, facilitating real-time data connectivity for both humans and machines on Earth.

Nick Destrycker, Founder and CEO at EDGX, envisions a future where thousands of interconnected satellites powered by next-generation AI technology contribute to various applications. BrainChip's Akida technology, an event-based accelerator for AI at the ...
... edge, aligns perfectly with EDGX's vision for brain-inspired data processing units in space.

Peter van der Made, Founder and CTO at BrainChip, highlights the importance of delivering high-performance, ultra-low power, self-contained processing for constrained environments like space. BrainChip's focus on combining neuromorphic principles with deep learning customization and continuous learning complements EDGX's need for disruptive technology.

To formalize their partnership, EDGX and BrainChip signed a Non-binding Memorandum of Understanding at the European Space Agency's (ESA) EDHPC Conference in Juan-les-Pins, France. The collaboration aims to leverage Akida's dual-mode capabilities, allowing it to run conventional convolutional neural networks (CNN) while also operating in event-based mode, which significantly reduces power demand—a critical factor in space environments.

Laurent Hili, Microelectronics and Data Handling Engineer at ESA, emphasizes the potential of event-based processing to revolutionize space data processing by enabling tasks that were previously impossible due to power constraints.

About EDGX:
