There are basically two different methods used by cord blood banks to collect the umbilical cord blood.
The first method used is to collect the cord blood just after the placenta is out of the women's body. But because blood in the placenta and umbilical cord clots very rapidly, this cord blood collection has to be done quickly, and usually as soon as possible after delivery of the placenta.
The second method is different, as the collection of the cord blood happens just after the arrival of the baby in the third stage of labour, but before the placenta is delivered. The advantage of this method is that because the placenta is still compressed by the uterus, it will allow more blood to be collected, and thus give a better sample to be stored. The risk of this method though is that the cord blood collection is done in an environment that is inherently subject to a greater risk of contamination.
