The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) conducted a survey among electric vehicle (EV) owners to assess their understanding of EVs and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), also known as EV charging stations and chargers. The primary objective was to identify safety gaps related to this emerging technology to ensure the safety of consumers while operating and charging their EVs. The survey revealed that over 50% of home electrical systems are not adequately prepared for EV charging.

Key findings from the survey include:

1. Safety as a Top Priority: Survey respondents overwhelmingly emphasized the importance of safety in the installation and use of EVSE. Approximately 75% of EV owners reported not experiencing any charging issues, but alarmingly, 8% admitted to receiving an electrical shock while charging their vehicles.

2. Safety Considerations: Various safety considerations were highlighted, ranging from the installation location of charging equipment to the use of certified and high-quality chargers from reputable sources. It was clear that consumers need more information on how to charge their EVs ...
... safely.

3. Lack of Information: Nearly one-third of the surveyed EV owners indicated that they did not receive information related to charging safety before purchasing their EVs. This underscores the need for readily available resources to educate consumers on safe EV charging practices.

4. Home Preparation: When asked about preparing their homes for EVs, 63% of respondents scheduled a home inspection before installing EVSE, and 54% required an electrical panel upgrade to accommodate the increased electrical demand. Older homes were mentioned as potentially unable to safely handle EV charging without overloading the electrical system.

5. Benefits of Home Charging: Many respondents emphasized the convenience of having a home EV charger, primarily for overnight charging and reducing reliance on public charging stations. Some expressed frustration with finding available charging stations, citing issues such as station scarcity, stations occupied by non-EVs, and inconvenient locations.

6. Use of Manufacturer-Approved Equipment: ESFI strongly recommended the use of manufacturer-approved charging cables and cautioned against non-approved adapters, which can bypass safety features and pose risks of shocks, fires, and battery damage. Approximately 45% of respondents had purchased an adapter, while 53% had not.

7. Safety Reminders: ESFI, as a trusted authority on electrical safety, provided essential safety reminders for EV owners. These include following manufacturer instructions, inspecting chargers for damage before use, avoiding extension cords, not altering or modifying chargers, and ensuring proper storage of EV chargers to prevent damage. Drivers were also advised to be aware of their surroundings when parking in public EV charging spots.

8. Promoting Safety Resources: ESFI emphasized its commitment to keeping consumers safe as they adopt EV technology. They encouraged the sharing of free EV safety resources available on their website (esfi.org) within communities.

In summary, the ESFI survey of EV owners highlighted the critical importance of safety in the adoption and use of electric vehicles. It underscored the need for comprehensive safety education, the use of certified equipment, and proper preparation of homes for EV charging. As EV adoption continues to grow, prioritizing safety will remain paramount to ensure the well-being of both consumers and their vehicles.
