According to studies, humans have the ability to capture and memorize visual imagery and features. Visuals are a great way to inflict a number of different information, ideas or emotions. It is a smart way to work in crucial or substantial information into a person’s mind. While most of us can see everything around us, it is the interpreting that brings forth the actual meaning behind visuals. In business, visuals play an important role in grabbing attention of people be it for promotion or sales. There are various methods of inculcating visuals, our anchor’s being merchandising and interior designing.

The Attractive Quality of a Retail Store

Retail visual merchandising is a practice in retail industry related to visually attracting potential consumers into buying and increasing sales. It is a method of presenting products in an appealing manner to convince a purchase out of a customer. In retail visual merchandising, the overall look of the retail store or location, needs to be apt with well strategical placements of products, colour ...
... palate, lighting, etc. When a customer enters a retail store, they need to be well comforted into the surrounding by conditioning them to attractive colours, signs and product. Retail visual merchandising’s ultimate purpose is to use the retail space to generate more sales.

Visually Appealing Characteristics of a Retail Store

Techniques used in retail visual merchandising are as follows .

· Store Layout

The store layout is an essential part of the retail visual merchandising process. The store layout can be of grid layout, racetrack layout or free form layout. In these layouts, the most useful is free form. As free form layout provides browsing and a more relaxed spatial structure. In grid layout, a rectangular shape organisation is followed which helps in shopping quickly utilising maximum shop floor space. While in racetrack layout, a straight path is followed which helps in displaying every possible product associated with the brand but can be irritating to the consumer as they feel like they are being directed onto a forced path.

· Point of Purchase Display

In merchandising, the positioning of products puts a huge impact on buying-decision making process. Products at eye-level are catchier and hence, gives a sense of freedom of choice. Odd numbers re more attention seeking as well because of the fact that odd numbers instil a sense of incompleteness according to general psychology. Similar products should be arranged from left to right while their varieties should be arranged from top to bottom. The psychology behind this is the convenience of our vision of browsing from left to right hence, showcasing a number of products without much clutter.

· Lighting

As essential part of merchandising pushing products indirectly through the medium of light. Highlighting areas or products using strategically placed lights can increase honesty, positivity and impulse buying. Another essential component is the level of brightness of lighting. The brighter the place is the better.

Modern Design Form & Its Application

Contemporary interior design is the concept of simplicity, subtle sophistication, deliberate use of texture and clean lines.
