Vision and Learning Vision plays an important role in our ability to learn. Even gifted students can struggle academically if they can't see the whiteboard or read assignments closely. At the beginning of the school year, we want to remind our patients of the importance, especially for children, of regular check-ups.

Vision and learning
Eyesight and learning are closely related, and clear vision is important to ensure that your child can get the most out of his education. Although many schools offer vision tests, these tests generally test distance vision, where most of the learning is done in reading distance. Various vision conditions can be missed by vision tests that lead to the wrong diagnosis of a child with learning disabilities or attention problems. One in four children with reading and learning difficulties have an undiagnosed vision problem.

As mentioned above, more than 80% of classroom learning is visual, so every word of sight can have a huge impact on your child's education. In fact, more than 60% of "problem learners" have undiagnosed vision problems.

It is important to note that learning-related ...
... vision problems are not learning disabilities. Learning disabilities do not include learning problems that are primarily visual, hearing or motor. However, a child may have a learning disability, a learning-related vision problem, or both. All vision problems that can affect school performance are considered learning-related vision problems. Common disorders that can affect a patient's ability to learn include refractive errors, visual function, and visual processing problems. VISION PROBLEMS RELATED TO LEARNING
The visual system begins with the eyes and ends with the brain. Learning disabilities related to vision are divided into three categories. Refractive Error - Refractive error refers to a condition of the eye that can affect the way light is bent. Common refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism that can affect your child's vision. Eye function - Eye function refers to how the eyes work together to focus, focus to see objects in the distance, and make fine movements that may be necessary for reading.
Dysfunctions and visual perception - Vision problems rely on the brain for information because a large part of learning involves understanding what is seen and comparing it to information stored in the brain. Word comprehension and the ability to form mental images of words are examples of visual perception.
ADVICE
Pay attention to any obvious signs of behavior from your child, such as an inability to concentrate during close work, complaints of restlessness, or an inability to concentrate while studying. . Common signs of learning-related vision problems may include:

Double or double vision
Eye fatigue
Headache
Book or close the job to the front
Repeats, contradicts or omits words
Eyes are wiped
Hand-eye coordination is not well developed
Research findings
A comprehensive eye exam can help determine if there are any vision problems that are causing disruptions and difficulties in school. However, further examination by an optician who specializes in educational vision can help identify any cognitive or functional issues affecting your child's learning. Treatment options
Learning-related vision problems can be treated with prescription glasses or vision therapy. Corrective glasses or contacts can be worn all the time or only for certain activities such as schoolwork or reading. Follow your eye doctor's instructions and be patient because it will take time to adjust to the glasses. Vision therapy can help solve functional problems and help train the eyes to work better together. Vision therapy is a specialized service that may not be available in all practices, however, your ophthalmologist can refer you if necessary.

If you are concerned about yourself or your child's performance in school, work, or sports, a visual inspection can help determine the cause. For more information about the relationship between vision and learning or to schedule an appointment, please contact Tatum Eye Care today.
