Youth hunting in Alabama and other Southern states is being promoted all the time for the right reasons. It helps to instill in the young generation – tomorrow’s hunters and wing-shooters – a love and early introduction into what has been for many generations of Americans a pastime, a way of life. Those born into homes with a love for nature, wildlife conservation and responsible hunting practices, understand wat it means to look forward to their yearly outing to their favorite hunting lodge – often as a family unit, which includes children.

The youth is offered various opportunities to develop their interest in hunting and wing-shooting, also by leading bodies and organizations in the Soth and elsewhere. For example, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is always keen to ensure that hunters and wing-shooters, and the youth, are given the opportunities to develop their interest and skills with regard to what is expected of the hunter and shooter.

This department is well aware of how important initiatives are to encourage the youth to follow in the footsteps of their parents ...
... and those generations before them. Encouraging and developing a healthy interest in hunting and wing-shooting among the youth is one of their priorities, which is why they make sure that the state offers good opportunities for the youth to partake of days when they are taught about various topics that will ensure they understand and support the drive that the Department has put in place.

And for the parents: it is great to know that such opportunities exist and to encourage your child to take part in activities, to accompany them and to show a keen, ongoing interest in this phase of their young life. In terms of the term ‘youth’ it is mentioned that in Alabama youth refers to persons younger than 16, after which the individual is considered an adult for reasons of hunting, By that age the young hunters have to buy their own license. Under 16 they must always be accompanied by adults, and where shooting is practiced, or hunting with live ammunition, they are not permitted to be on their own.

Hunting education for the youth is, if you want to qualify as a licensed hunter, compulsory if you were born on or after August the 1st, 1977. This ensures that younger hunters are properly educated and well aware of all of the issues that relate to hunting in the state of Alabama. Young members can take one of two courses: they can either attend a traditional course, or they can follow it online. Several courses are offered, also depending on the young person’s preference, which they will obviously discuss with their parents before they sit for whichever course they enroll for.

Examples of such courses offered by ADCNR include a youth dove hunting course on Saturdays in the fall, for which the attendee has to register upfront. The youth are also given opportunities to take part in youth deer hunting opportunities, when only the youth is hunting – in the presence of responsible adults. Several opportunities exist in this regard, and interested parties are encouraged to contact ADCNR or to liaise directly with hunting lodges that are known to offer these. The same is true for, say, youth squirrel hunting, youth turkey hunting opportunities and to learn about wing-shooting.

Good hunting lodges that are known to support youth hunting, for example Aliceville’s Westervelt Lodge, are always keen to offer advice and assistance in this regard: after all, today’s youth are the hunters that will one day visit them for white-tailed deer hunting and great wing-shooting trips.
