Membrion Series B Round Closes At $12.5m
Membrion, an electro-desalination membrane manufacturer, has successfully concluded its Series B funding round, raising a total of $12.5 million. The latest funding round included a second close of $5.5 million led by Samsung Venture Investment Corporation and Lam Capital. Other notable participants in this round include Indico Capital Partners, Harvard Business School New York Alumni Angel Group, New York Angels, and GiantLeap Capital. This follows the previously announced Series B investments of $7 million in the first quarter of 2023, which were spearheaded by PureTerra Ventures and included participation from GiantLeap Capital, Safar Partners, and Freeflow Ventures. As a result, Membrion has cumulatively raised a remarkable $23 million since its inception.
Greg Newbloom, Founder and CEO of Membrion, expressed great enthusiasm for the investment syndicate assembled for this round. He highlighted Membrion's technology as a game-changer, particularly in creating circularity for valuable resources derived from challenging wastewater, including harsh metal-laden wastewater often found in the semiconductor industry. Newbloom ...
... emphasized the success of Membrion's pilot projects and the upcoming launch of multiple commercial installations, which are anticipated to save each customer hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. A notable achievement is Membrion's unique positioning as a sustainable wastewater treatment solution that reduces facility operating costs, a key factor contributing to its success.
Lam Capital, a significant investor in this round, is Lam Research's venture group, specializing in backing innovative companies that address critical challenges in the semiconductor manufacturing sector. Kevin Chen, Head of Lam Capital, highlighted Membrion's focus on creating sustainable solutions for water and resource circularity. He indicated that the investment aligns with Lam Capital's strategy to support companies capable of driving technological disruption and advancing the semiconductor industry. Chen believes that Membrion's innovations have the potential to play a pivotal role in treating and reusing complex industrial wastewater sustainably, thereby contributing to ambitious Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.
Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, another lead investor, is Samsung's corporate venture arm renowned for investing in breakthrough technologies across various industries. The Samsung Ventures Investment Team expressed excitement about Membrion's approach to tackling challenging industrial applications through the development of new wastewater treatment solutions. By selectively removing salts, metals, and minerals from wastewater, Membrion opens opportunities for water recycling and resource recovery in sectors such as microelectronics.
Membrion's core innovation lies in manufacturing ceramic desalination membranes capable of recovering up to 98% of water, even under harsh conditions. These flexible, electro-ceramic membranes offer versatile capabilities for water recovery, enabling manufacturers to recycle water within previously inaccessible pH ranges and containing challenging trace chemicals. Notably, Membrion's membranes exhibit low fouling, reduced cleaning requirements, resistance to oxidizers, ultra-low pH stability, and economic viability.
