The International Automotive Task Force (IATF) established the ISO/TS 16949 standard, which is now known as the IATF 16949 standard, in 1999 to offer automotive suppliers a single, internationally recognized quality standard. Additionally, the most recent version of this IATF standard was developed with continuous industry feedback and involvement by AIAG members (North America), and it is also based on ISO 9001:2015 - developed to be used in combination with ISO 9001:2015. IATF 16949, which combines standards from the US and Europe, guides how to implement best practices while creating, manufacturing, installing, or maintaining automotive components. The establishment of a system to deliver continuous improvement and customer satisfaction is acknowledged as the cornerstone for an industry-related business, and many automotive organizations demand this QMS become a supplier. IATF 16949:2016 should be acknowledged for the significant advantages it can bring to a company rather than just being seen as a prerequisite to enter the automotive industry.

The IATF 16949 standard specifies the elements of a quality management ...
... system that is aligned with the automotive sector to give businesses a uniform framework for implementation and to help them fulfill the requirements of their clients and the wider market for organizational quality and consistency. IATF 16949 is centered on seven Quality Management Principles and is completely aligned with the framework and application of ISO 9001:2015.

1. Customer Focus
2. Leadership
3. Engagement of People
4. Process Approach
5. Improvement
6. Evidence-based Decision Making
7. Relationship Management

Principle 1: Customer Focus: Customers are at the core of quality management. Understanding the present and future consumer requirements is important because businesses rely on their customers. Organizations can also try to go above and beyond client expectations while continuing to satisfy customer requirements.

Principle 2: Leadership: Another essential QMS principle is leadership. The top management of the company is in charge of setting its direction and establishing its sense of purpose. The internal climate that enables individuals to actively participate in attaining the goals of the organization must be created and maintained by leaders. Since leaders set guidelines, Top Management must support these values and the quality management system. To keep the QMS (and the organization) operating properly, the organization must hold management review meetings.

Principle 3: Engagement of people: Each job in an organization is essential to the organization's smooth operation, and their full participation enables them to utilize their skills to the organization's advantage. To ensure that personnel have the resources they need to perform their duties and contribute to the success of the organization, the standard mandates effective IATF 16949 awareness training. Employees must comprehend quality initiatives to support them.

Principle 4: A process approach: When resources associated with activities are handled as a process, a QMS produces the best results. A process is made up of several steps that transform inputs and outputs by using resources like people and machinery. Every organization is formed of numerous interconnected processes.

Principle 5: Improvement: The organization's long-term goal should be to continuously improve its performance as a whole. A crucial necessity is to audit the QMS and make the procedures better.

Principle 6: Evidence-based decision-making: The analysis of data and information should serve as the foundation for decisions that the organization attempts to make to be effective. It is crucial to take corrective actions to boost performance when the data shows that a certain region is underperforming. The IATF 16949 documents can be used to define the process and record the data. The root cause analysis is also a helpful technique to identify the issue's origin to know what corrective measures need to be performed.

Principle 7: Relationship management: The ability of an organization and its suppliers to produce value must be interdependent, and a mutually beneficial partnership strengthens that ability. There is no one right way to apply any of the aforementioned concepts because every organization is different. But putting IATF 16949 into practice can help to create a strong foundation for better quality and customer satisfaction.
