A group of seven leading automakers, including BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, have established a joint venture in North America to address the pressing issue of inadequate electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. With the increasing popularity of EVs due to their environmental benefits, the lack of sufficient charging stations has emerged as a major obstacle to widespread adoption. To tackle this challenge, the joint venture aims to deploy user-friendly DC fast chargers along US and Canadian highways, as well as in urban areas, while relying on renewable energy sources.

The initiative is set to kick off operations in the US by the summer of 2024, with Canada joining once the initial stations are installed. However, projections from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) indicate that the expected 30-42 million EVs on the roads by 2030 will require around 182,000 fast chargers to meet the increasing demand. The scarcity of charging infrastructure is further compounded by various issues, such as charger malfunctions, broken displays, software glitches, and charging spots being occupied, resulting in challenges for 21% of EV owners who faced difficulties with public chargers at the beginning of 2023.

The joint venture's main objective is to significantly improve the accessibility and reliability of charging infrastructure to create a positive charging experience for EV consumers. According to industry experts, including Sam Abuelsamid from Guidehouse Insights, the expansion of reliable chargers will not only benefit potential EV buyers but also sway those who were hesitant about switching to electric vehicles.
