Sedation Dentistry, The Answer To Dental Phobia

Sedation dentistry is a breakthrough in the field of dentistry. It has helped thousands of people to achieve the all American smile and to improve their dental health by helping them battle the fear of going to the dentist. The fear of visiting the dentist is associated with fear of pain and has its roots in childhood when a patient gets particularly anxious or agitated when undergoing dental treatment at a dental clinic. This is a common phenomenon among millions of Americans today; the greatest stumbling block to great looking teeth stems from an innate fear of sitting on the dental chair. This is why sedation dentistry has been considered one of the most helpful dentistry advancement in history.
About Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry provides a calm, anxiety-free dental experience for patients who have innate fears of seeking dental treatment. Unlike general anesthesia, sedation techniques allow patients to be fully conscious and responsive during a dental procedure but without feeling anxious or fearful. For ...
... those who are afraid of needles, sedatives can be administered by inhalation or by oral medication.
Sedatives are administered to depress the patient's central nervous system reducing his or her level of conscious awareness. As a result, a stressful dental ordeal can turn into a calm, relaxing and pleasant experience that leaves the patient with no bad impressions or unpleasant memories after a procedure. Therefore, sedative dentistry helps patients look forward to their next dental appointment resulting in great looking teeth and optimum dental health.
How Sedation Dentistry Works
A qualified sedation dentist will administer the right level of sedative drugs depending on the patient's medical history as well as the nature of the dental procedure. There are three levels of sedation which determine the kind of sedative drugs being administered:
Mild Sedation or Anxiolysis is dispensed by inhalation of nitrous oxide or laughing gas where the sedative is gently administered to the patient's respiratory system through a small hood placed over the nose before and during the treatment.
Moderate Sedation on the other hand, is administered via oral medication or injection, known as intravenous sedation. The type of sedation being administered is determined by the kind of treatment the patient is seeking and whether the patient has an inherent fear of needles. Intravenous sedation has an instant effect and is more appropriate for short dental procedures. Under moderate sedation, the patient can breathe independently, retains his or her reflexes as well as respond to verbal or physical stimulation during the course of the treatment.
Deep Sedation is administered with IV sedation or general anesthesia medications during which the patient loses consciousness and is unable to respond to verbal or physical stimulation. Like anesthesia, deep sedatives can last for hours after the procedure.
As a patient's mental and emotional wellbeing are as important as their dental health, sedation dentistry can help patients develop a healthy perception about seeking dental treatment.
